Did Virgin change their color from white, or is it just for this plane?

Yes, Virgin's colourscheme was changed from the white fuselage to the grey/silver metalic look.

Virgin's fuselages are painted with a special paint which, due to its composition, seems to change hue in different light and when viewed from different angles.

A similar paint is/was offered by Ford on some of their cars in the US and Europe.

All Virgin repaints were done in a specially commissioned paint spray hangar in Amsterdam.

The scheme looks at its most silver on a grey London day. On a sunny day at altitude, viewed from the ground with a good telescope, it can look almost pure white but the most stunning way I have ever seen it is coming off the Atlantic into a winter sunrise over Ireland, when the colours reflected by the special particles in the paint gave a display of pinks, oranges, reds and blues which changed as the angle of the aircraft to the rising sun progressed from almost 180 degrees to around 80 degrees. Stunning.

Eastcoast,

I don't know what happened there, when I was in the VS hanger on Sat, they had just applied the decals with the name "Madame Butterfly" to the a/c. If you look at the pic with S.R.B. (AKA - Boss  Laugh out loud ) in it, you can see where it says 'Cloud Nine' there is a rectangular section that is a slightly differant shade to the rest of the a/c. I'm not sure if this is a permanent name change or a temporary one. It took most of us by suprise when it was changed.

JFKTOWERFAN,

Where have you been ?? VS changed their livery from white to silver about 2 years ago, although there are still about 5 A343's in the old livery ( and boy do they look awful - the red has all faded and has all differant shades where various engine/tailfin panels have been replaced, and the white paint has loads of dirt all over it. ) The last B744 (G-VBIG) is at AMS at the moment for it's D-check and is being repainted and having the new IFE system,V-PORT installed at the same time as new seats in econ and premium.

I also heard that S.R.B. wasn't happy with the silver paint at first, as he expected it to look like the AA a/c do, don't know how true that is tho.

Leezyjet -

I need a favor. I'm having Bader Murad of Bader Models, build me VS's first A340-600. His models are built of mahogany wood and painted by hand to perfection.

I have provided the pics links to him to vierw the final paint scheme of VS's new A340-600. Since the name has not been finalized "Madame Butterfly", "Cloud Nine" or "Claudia None". Can you keep me informed of your finding, so I could pass the information to him.

Much appreciated!

Oxygen, it's Claudia Schiffer (or is it Claudia Vaughn now?).

The news service Ananova did a small report:

The world's longest passenger plane has made its first official flight after being given the seal of approval by Claudia Schiffer.

She signed the side of the giant plane before it took off, scribbling out its original name, Cloud Nine, and renaming it Claudia Nine.

As well as Ms Schiffer's signature the plane also has the legend "Mine's Bigger Than Yours" written on its side.

Yes, Bader models are not cheap, but you will be amazed what people can do by hand. Simply amazing work!

Yes, I always take photos of my models, so I will display once I receive the model.

He has been asking for photos for the last week, so yesterday was very exciting to see the photos are starting to appear.

Thanks again!

LJ,

G-VBIG was on a test flight to NCL and is now back in AMS...due out next week I think.

Leezy,

I've sent u another email.....

Talking of models, apparently all the pax on the Farnboro trip on Monday got given a 1/400 VS A340-600 model. It says on the Dragon Wings site that it's a corporate release....hopefully they'll be sold in-flight (and in the staff shop) and won't just be a one-off release. Here's a link:

Did anyone see the photo of G-VSHY in today's (Tue 23/7) Daily Mirror newspaper (UK)? It shows an awesome shot of her flying over Hounslow (?) High Street or nearby on final approach to LHR. Unfortunately they didn't credit the photographer, hope they had permission to use the photo!

You really have to see it, photos aren't a good indication of colour because of different film types, not producing true colours. So, go to an airport and see all the Virgin Aircraft, it looks more Silver  Smile

EGFF,

G-VSKY is a tough old bird, don't forget what happened to her, but she has seen better days.

LJ / Airchabum,

I saw the ACARS movement message for that AMS-NCL flt come thru on the telex printer, but just thought it was a spurious one so ignored it.
Got your e-mail now, sent a reply too.

Looking at that model, it's along the lines of the ones they sell in the staff shop, so I guess it will be putting in an apperance soon. When I was at BMI, all the staff got a model of the A332 when they launched it and the new colour scheme, we were told it was a limited release, but they have now made an apperance in the shops. I was speaking to the guy that owns that model shop in the Sheraton Skyline, and he said that VS won't give out a license to make models, thats why there are so few companies that produce them. He did say it was a real shame, as he said the poor quality plastic ones they do get go like hot cakes.

The shop on the roof of T2 is selling the VS 744/343 models for £40, that we get for a tenner in the staff shop. I think the guy in the shop must have a contact at VS thats making a nice little profit from them.
