Usairways Transcon To LGA,DCA, BOS

Why doesn't US offer transcon flights out of BOS, DCA, or LGA? In each of these cities they are a major carrier.

LGA and DCA are limted by perimeter rules. BOS has too much competition on the transcons.

The furthest you can fly from LGA would be Denver, there's a 1,500 mile range restriction. Same with DCA.

However Congress recently made exceptions for a hand full of flights from DCA, mostly on smaller carriers (HP,AS,Frontier, National) for selfish purposes.

Intersting off-topic sidenote, for years DL has wanted to fly from LGA and DCA to their SLC hub, which is over the 1500 mile perimeter limit. They never received authority - I think that gave up trying a couple years back.

TWA got the rights to fly DCA to LAX......is AA operating this "special" service?

TWA's LAX-DCA rights were given to Alaska... which began flying ANC-SEA-DCA, much to the approval of the Alaskan congressional contingent.

Very interesting post. When you think about this may have been one of the downfalls of US. Maybe they should have thought about transcon services from EWR, BOS and BWI to all points west. Then again, at their height of heavily occupying BOS, BWI and EWR they had nothing that could fly the distance except for the 757/767 which were tied up on other routes...by the time the Airbuses came along they were already a shrinking airline. But had they been able to do this earlier, they may have been able to build a better loyaltly of bus. pax.

OK, US Airways never "occupied" Newark in any way. They used to have more flights out of EWR than they do today, but basically US's service was regional and to their hubs. They never had a HUGE presence at Newark.

The transcon market out of Newark has long been dominated by UA, AA, and CO.
