Today (26.07.2002) Polish and Russian ministers of transport sign an agreements that LOT Polish Airlines will pay less than few years before for flights over Russia to Far East. And it is said that LOT will reopen again to Beijin and Bangkok, and will open to Singapore and Seoul.
In June LOT opened a daily flight to Kaliningrad from WAW Okecie for $110!!!!!

That is great news, they will not be able to connect to even more star alliance partners. I remember flying from Warsaw to Beijing back in 1991 the flight was oversold in both directions. Should be a good move for them I think.

Will they have enough 767's for all these routes? I am asking because they are constantly leasing them back and forth and I would imagine that they would need all of them now. Anyways I think this is a good move and I hope it works well for them.

I think that they are now back to their full 767 fleet, they have added an ex-malev 767-300 to the fleet and it is operating for Universal, while all of the LOT 767-300/200's are back flying for LOT. If they are going to add all 4 destinations they will probably need 1 or 2 more airplanes depending on what kind of frequency they will be doing to the far east.

Dzien dobre!
Great to see new routes opening anytime; I would imagine 767s would be most likely for far east routes, particularly SEL; BKK would probably require a 777 in due course, so ultimately I would expect LO to dispose of the 762s (which are around 12-13 y/o now) and acquire 2 777s, which would be used mostly to NYC and ORD.
For LO, which has 738s on order, a combination of 737NGs and 777s would make sense, as there are many similarities between the two cockpits which would make conversion between them a lot easier.
Ultimately, the 763 could be phased out in favour of more 777s; even though there would be sense in bringing in the 764, I don't see it happening; I think the complete lack of success of the 764 outside DL and CO will make many airlines wary of it. After all, airlines like to buy planes for which there'll be a market after they dispose of them.

I read a couple of posts back that LOT has 738's on order. Does anyone know how many? That is the first that I had heard of that. Also it has been rumered for a while that they are going to order the Emb-170. I personally thought that the order might be placed during the airshow, but it didnt so does anyone know when we could expect an order for the Emb 170? The only problem for LOT buying the 777 I think is because they have huge variances in demand for the ORD-WAW route anyway. It is almost impossible to get a seat during the summer, but the route really struggles during the winter as the demand is really slow. So I would imagine for the long haul routes they would probobly end up with a fleey of half 767' s and half 777's. Maybe 3 of each?

the 767's are the perfect airplane for LOT, There is still not enough demand for the 777 year round. The North American routes struggle through the winter and are often going out half full. The 764 is still about the biggest that LOT could afford to go at this time. At most they could lease one or two 777's for the summers.

LOT has 2 737-800s on order that i know of, but they were supposed to be delivered in Jan and Feb of this year. I don't think they have them yet so i don't know what's holding it up.
I also don't think that LOT will permanently purchase any 777s. Unless there is a large and steady demand on the far east routes. As many people have already pointed out the north american demand pretty much stops during the winter, so they might just lease 777s for summers. A purchase of a 764 seems much more probable for me.

I think they will use there 767, unless they are are going for Airbus, it would make sense because of the Star-alliance. I think cooperation with SAS and Lufthansa about there airplanes would make sense. Most * airlines are into Airbus. By the way, now soon I can earn miles to Bangkok, nonstop SK and Thai, via Germany Lunthansa and Thai, via Austria and via Polen. Quite nice

There is still not enough demand for the 777 year round. Additionally the 777 is too big to operate from Krakow to the US. Even the 767s flying the route now are under weight restrictions.
As for the 738s - I read on some other forum that the order was cancelled. Current rumors include ordering the 170 and in the future replacing the Boeings (737s and 767s) with R'buses (at least it looks more likely that they'll choose Airbus under the current circumstances).

There was never a firm 738 order. I emailed LOT some time ago and they said that they optioned for two 738s, but never picked up on them.
I'd like to see the ERJ-170 in LOT colors, as for 777s and 764s, LOT seem right now more focused on expanding its RJ fleet as opposed to concentrating on the mainline fleet.
Peter: SP-LPB may be back but it still wears Universal titles.

Right. But they can't really fly to Bangkok with an RJ can they?. Their 767s are streched pretty tight already during the summers without the far east routes, so eventually they'll need something else to fill in the gap.

Sure they can! Just strap an ERJ-145 to the back of a 763 and let her rip!
Seriously, right now they are focused on the RJ fleet, but I didn't say that because of this development they weren't going to shift focus back to their mainline aircraft now did I?

Hi,
I just wanted to add my five cents to the discussion;
1. LOT has 5 767s (3 x -300 and 2 x -200). SP-LPB in Universal livery is flying this summer on LOT routes, SP-LPD is leased by LOT from Malev for the summer only and flies for Universal. After summer -LPD will be returned to Malev and -LPB will operate for Universal.
2. Forget about LOT buying 777. There are simple too big for the needs. Winter traffic to US is too low and it's not justified to buy 777 just for the summer season.
3. Remember that LOT used to fly to BKK with the same fleet (5) of 767s.
4. There are no orders of 738 for LOT anymore. Actually 70-seaters are considered to (at least partially) replace some of the current 737s.
BTW - LOT767SP-LPA, where did you read the information about the agreement signed with Russia. I couldn't find it.
