It seems that UPS operates an extremely diverse fleet. Currently the operator's fleet includes:

727
DC-8
747
A300
767
757
MD-11

I know that the 727s and DC-8s are re-engined AC. Therefore, they are not on the verge of retirement. In an age of fleet commonality it seems that this is an eclectic mix.

What are UPS' long term fleet plans? Any ideas?

You don't see many Mag Dog's because there aren't many of them. We might have four or five on the property and I think the order was 13 firm.

The 727 fleet has been downsized. All 8 of the -200 have been parked and, I think, 7 of the -100's. They say as the economy turns around we might start flying some of these again but we have also displaced the crews.

The 747's break down a lot and a couple have been parked...some crews have been displaced.

The DC-8's just keep on a rockin'.

We are getting a ton of A300's.

Supposedly we are looking at 747-400's, the A380, or a cargo version of the 777 to replace the 747-100's....not much has been said about this since 9/11.

The 722's have been parked because they are not as efficient as the 757 but are close on capacity. Out of 21 747's one has been dismantled 691up which was the oldest 747 flying at the time and another one out in AZ. All of the 727-100's are at Kelly AFB and are being maintained by Dee Howard and could be put back on line at any given moment. The A300's are being delivered right now at an average of one per month. 2 767's were delivered to us last year increasing the size of that fleet. The 757's are currently the work horse and are flying more 727 routes especially in Europe and intra Asian routes. The A300's are flying more of the 757 routes domestically and will soon start flying in Europe as well. There are 3 MD-11's in fleet now currently flying domestic routes but will soon be flying to Asia. The early 74's have had problems but there are a lot of 200 series 74's that are doing very well for UPS. As for the DC-8s they are great aircraft and will be flying for some time but not on Intl routes except for Canada and some Latin American routes.

Now to answer the question. UPS started with DC-8's 727's and Expeditors when air operations started. The 747's came on a short time after. The Expeditors were given up then and the 757/767 pf's came on line. While there is a combination of engine variety in our fleet the 757/767 is pretty much the core of the fleet at the moment which helps for commonality. The A300 and MD-11 are a whole different ball game.

As far as long range fleet plans. The 747-400 freighter and special freighter are in consideration. The A380 is going to be guinea pigged by Fed Ex first then a decision will be made. The 777 freighter is not a real consideration at the moment from Boeing. The A330 freighter is actually listed in the Airbus contract for the A300 to allow UPS to use some options on an A330 freighter if and when developed and needed.

All 5 of the leased 747-200s will be returned to their owners when their leases expire. Most of the 747-100s will be slowly retired over the next few years, leaving the 3 owned 747-200s that will remain in service till around 2006-8?
