well working a 12 hour battlestaff shift has given me some freetime to think of stuff. So here is a question....
Continental offers the connecting EFD-Ellington Field to IAH crosstown Houston service several times a day. (I have flown it several times) The service is free if you are connecting to any Continental flight. In fact they even ran it from Hobby for time as well, but no longer.
Would this kind of connection work for Galveston?????? I am sure CO would have done it already if it could make money, but I was just wondering. The drive back from Galveston when I was home a few weeks ago just got me thinking I guess
I know there are not that many folks on the island needing to fly on a daily basis, but it would seem there is at least enough Biz/tourist demand to fill 2-3 flights a day for connections.

Dont know the answer to that question, but won't it be interesting to see those flights in a RJ when CO goes all jet... I guess that 5 minute ATR flight will be cut down to 2 minutes... I was a bobcat but I am pulling for the horns this year...they are due!

Yea, you gotta love the crosstown jet service. I hope they don't plan on dropping EFD after they go all jet. The little terminal is fairly modern. Plus that would stop me from eating at P-Ts Cajun BBQ before my flights
Sadly for me San Angelo was dropped after Sept 11. I used that service often to go see my mom. Now American Eagle to DFW is all that is left as ASA pulled out as well. I would like to see SJT get a small jet to IAH as well

I have flown the HOU-IAH, and EFD-IAH run many times since I live on the southside of Houston. The flights in the ATRs to EFD are about 15-17mins. Galveston has petitioned Continental for service before, but they determined that EFD service was sufficient enough. However, that was well before Galveston's cruise line industry existed; with several ships now running from Galveston the service could be very popular and lucrative. I wonder if that would draw from EFD loads however?

I used to work at Galveston's Scholls Field, and now work at Continental Express. I don't see the loads to justify service to GLS. You can't provide free service and show profit. There have been several carriers to attempt sucessful service, but I don't think many have lasted longer than 90 days. One of the problems is with the City of Galveston and the political system there. Not to mention what logistics would be required to set up a secure area and passenger and baggage screening. Co-Ex just announced service from IAH-CRW, and that took a $500K government subsidy to initiate.
A non rush hour drive from the Seawall to short time parking at Terminal C has taken me less than an hour on more than one occaision.

I've driven the route before as well, and I understand how it can be easy to get to Ellington from Galveston, but there are actually tourists who go to Galveston, from North and West Texas (not as much as Corpus.Padre but some) and Louisiana. Plus as mentioned the cruise ships etc. It just seems like an underserved market. There is no service right now, correct? I know there was a Dallas flight for a time. As for the 'free' service. CO flies it to EFD several times a day, and I guess makes enough off people connecting to other flights to justify it. I think folks I know in Galveston/C Beach/Tiki island would pay a few dollars to avoid parking fees and driving to IAH for the quick connector. That is the Beauty of EFD if you are on the south side.

I think the main problem for GLS service is that it really only has the potential to draw from Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula; the drive from Texas City, La Marque, Hitchcock, etc. to Scholes takes about as long as the drive to EFD. With the City of Galveston's full-time population having remained steady at roughly 60,000 or decreased somewhat in the past 30 years, the market just isn't all that big. EFD has the potential to draw from the 150,000+ population of Galveston County which isn't on the island, as well as the Clear Lake area.
I remember there used to be commuter service to IAH back when I was a kid (late '70's/early '80's) on Metro Airlines; there was also a startup which tried to make GLS its hub (I think it was called Texas Airlines or something like that).
I've always thought, though, that AA might be able to grab some of the traffic which would otherwise fly on CO by offering flights from GLS to DFW.

Scholes Field never did squat.
Trans-Texas used to fly that route...for years and years.....back around 1964 or 65 as I recall the one way fare was $4. Scheduled time on a DC3 was like 20 or 25 minutes to Houston Hobby (when that was Houston's only airport).
Galveston as a tourist trap I mean destination...maybe to some folks. But most folks with reasonably good sense will exercise it and fly DAL-CRP or DAL-HRL to something which better resembles a decent beach.
Still, Galveston does offer Gaido's, the ferry boat to the Bolivar Peninsula (I tried to convince my wife that it was just like taking a cruise, plus it is always fun to throw alka seltzer to the gulls), and cemeteries where people are buried above ground (just like in New Orleans).
Galveston was a much better tourist destination back when the Maceo family was in charge.

My family and I had a blast at Galveston when I was a kid. I think it's where a lot of people from texas go for a vacation to the beach that's within driving distance. If they're gonna get a plane ticket they might as well go to CRP or HRL like you guys said earlier. Scholes is still a fun place to fly into with a GA aircraft, but I can't see any justification for Commercial service, even though it would be cool.
