Is There A Winglet Option Available For The 736/9

I've seen many BBJs (-700s) and 737-800s with this option, but never the 737-900, for instance. Why didn't Southwest opt for winglets on their 73G fleets? Doesn't this option provide for better aircraft performance and less fuel burn?Just curious.

The winglets are an option for all members of the 737 NG family. They can be retrofitted after the a/c has left Renton. a few airlines are currently ordering them with the winglets; other carriers are waiting to see what the benefits are with the blended winglets. I guess some will and some won't; I can see not havng them if the a/c are primarily used in shot hop (60-90 minutes), because the fuel savings will be minicule; for longer range flights (90+ minutes) yes, the benefits would be there, but would the benefits be cost-effective to retrofit on those NGs already in the fleet.

DJ are currently taking all their new 73Gs and 738s with winglets. They have not retrofitted any of their earlier 73Gs but have retrofitted 738s. Typical DJ sectors are 1 hour + up to 4 hours. It will be interesting to see if they retrofit all their fleet if their pending fleet decision is in favour of Boeing.

Maybe the airlines who put the winglets on their 737NG expects to have the aircrafts more than 15 years and then it would give the a/c a good economic.

Just about the -600 and -900s, I have not seen or heard anything about them being available for these aircraft. That doesn't mean that they won't do it, but they will have to be certified first - its not just a matter of slapping the things on and Bob's your uncle. As for Virgin Blue, don't forget that the winglets are made in Australia, so it is their way of supporting 'Australian Made'. I don't know how strongly this figured in their decision to fit the winglets, but supposedly Qantas fitted them mainly for that reason. It is also a useful marketing tool - they are somewhat distinctive - although then again I guess that has mitigated somewhat by both airlines now having them!
