Spirit Announces a Day of Freedom to Travel; All Seats On September 11, 2002 Will be No Charge Says CEO
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 6, 2002--Spirit Airlines, the largest privately-held airline in the United States, today announced it will not be charging airfare for any seat on any flight on September 11, 2002, according to the airline's CEO, Jacob Schorr.
"We are saying `thank you' to the American public and our valued customers for flying with us throughout this past year. Had it not been for the support of our passengers and their willingness to get back in the air after the tragedy last year, then Spirit Airlines may not have survived. We'd like to thank the public for keeping us flying, and these free seats are a token of our appreciation," said Schorr.
"We know that business and personal travel continues to return and it is our intent to fully support that need on September 11 as we have every day for the past twelve years. I want to personally encourage the public to travel on September 11 and exercise our freedom as Americans," said Schorr.
Reservations must be completed on-line at www.spiritair.com with a major credit card and/or through travel agents. Bookings may be made through September 8, 2002 or at such time when all 13,000 + seats have been filled, whichever comes first.
Spirit will be flying a full schedule of more than 90 flights to 14 cities/markets in the United States from New York to Los Angeles to Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Any customer who has already booked a flight for September 11, 2002 will receive a future flight credit for the September 11, 2002 portion of their itinerary. Spirit is in the process of contacting these customers.

Sweet . This must be a good way to get some valuable name recognition and a nice way to fill planes that would probably be empty anyway. It's only for one day, how much can Spirit possibly lose? And seeing as how many people fly roundtrip, they are going to have to pay for one half of the flight anyway, right?

Wow.
Two ways to look at it: They are doing it in honesty and a "gift" to the public, or you can be the cynic and say its a cheap stunt and taking advantage.
Personally, I think its great for an airline to give all of its seats for free for a day. Even if they wouldn't have sold that many anyway, its still a huge loss for them and what's the point in criticizing them for that.

I question the taste of this promotion. Running a cheap publicity stunt on the back of a national disaster?
I doubt it. It's just their way of saying "Thank You"
Last year 1,944 New Yorkers saw something and said something.

I think it is fantastic. Imagine how much revenue they will forego in the sake of saying "thank you" and remembering the tragedy that occurred. I say good on them for giving a damn!
It would seem that some nothing will please some of you people. If an airline introduced full flat beds and PTVs on CRJ aircraft then some of you would still find something to whinge about!

Ok... Sounds a little weird to me...
It is a nice idea, though. It will keep their crews occupied too!
Can't imagine that the loads will be too heavy even with the promotion.

Awesome. I assume that the free tickets will be one way and return tickets will be payed if on another date, but it would be possible to just fly one way and back both on sept 11 for free right?

I did not see anywhere in the PR Release where it specified tomorrow. Rather it said must be booked by Sep 8

I did manage to get through over the phone earlier today. An agent told me that if the reservation is made before 8AM on 8/7, the ticket will still be charged to the credit card used.

everyone who takes real advantage of this will have to do it as a day trip, or buy a one-way home.

I just booked a LGA-DTW-DEN-DTW-LGA flight on Spirit for September 11. Total price... $0.00. I've never been to Denver so any suggestions on something cool to do would be greatly appreciated.

What i have noticed is not all flights are avaible. You can plan a sameday trip. I have a feeling that i will be charged with Airport security fees and fees. I haven't recieved a confirmation email yet.

You know,
At first I was upset that I would not be able to take a day trip to Las Vegas or San Juan for free because I'll be in Cancun at the time. I'm on an AAdvatage challenge and I even considered going CUN-FLL just to catch a free flight. Maybe even back to ny so I could say hi to my mon and be back in Cancun buy nightime. Would it be fun?
Sounds like an easy question... but the answer is no. This is not a free flight. It cost us 3,000 of our freinds and fellow humans. It cost four aircraft and several buildings. It cost us so much stress and hurt and fear. I think it is in bad taste to say to the fammilies of those who died "Hey, I'm going to XXX for a day! I guess your family did not die in vain!"
I commend Spirit for this offer. And I probably would have taken it. But I know that on that plane I'd feel dirty once it hit me what the true cost of that trip was. I would probably cry...
I feel that we have to move on, yes. But this free trip is not moving on. It is remembering the past. And good on Spirit for doing so. But shame on those who are so happy to get this "free" trip to gamble in Atlantic City or have fun in the sun in Florida. If I was to fly this free offer it would only be as a show of defiance. Not to have fun. Just to say... I flew on 9/11/02... Terrorists... F*CK YOU!

seems that this offer is not open for every one. You have to live in USA or Canda or even your credit card/billing adress must be there. I'm flying in from Germany to EWR on September 11th and so I'm very interested in those free tickets... So I can show and demonstrate once more on this day that the terrorist can not change my life or cut my freedom...
