China Airlines is now offering a roundtrip first class fare of only US$1750(plus applicable taxes) from New York JFK to points in Asia. This is available from September 1.

A quite remarkable deal, since normal coach tickets are about $1000.

I just booked a FC seat on 9/9. On that particular day, they use a 747-400, instead of the usual A340s... so I should have to worry about their A340 pilots, right? (remember the ANC incident?)

Here's the "but, but" part.... is it, well, safe? Or should I plan on getting some extra coverage?(if you know what I mean)

by the way, for comparison purposes, Cathay Pacific charges more than double that amount for business class from JFK HKG.

Do you value your money or your life more? Ask yourself that question.

They are discounting fares, even in Taiwan, to get people to fly them.

Also, does this $1750 fare give you FF miles/points? Most of the super-cheap fares from Asian carriers do not qualify for miles/points.

Considering the accident they recently had, I'd expect them t be safer. It's always good to fly an airline that's had a recent crash, because they control everything more, and they offer better service and prices. Everything will be fine flying on CI now.

I wish I had your confidence Jj; the 742 incident highlighted another issue which I had assumed CAL were pretty OK on: maintenance. I heard a big promise when Christine Tung took over about the way safety was going to change at CAL, and then a few months later, we heard about the A340 incident.

That said, I'd probably go for this offer; CAL it may be, but First Class should be very nice (and even with CAL, your chances of a serious accident are fairly negligible). However, I wouldn't worry about FFPs; once with CAL is quite enough . . .

Is it true that CI's new First Class product (sleeper beds a la SQ, CX, BA, UA) is currently only available on the A340? If that is the case, flying the A340 would definitely be a much more comfortable experience.

Great that the F class ticket is so cheap. I think you can use the savings from the ticket to buy yourself some travel insurance.... in case anything happens.

There's always a better way to fly...

All the perceptions of CAL aside, it is really an airline that provides excellent in-flight service. I have flown them more than I should have within the last decade, enough for anyone to go "eeew, really...?".

But they really aren't not that bad. I have to agree with that statement about there has never been a safer time to fly CAL because of the media glare on the company, they cannot afford to fail anymore.

So you can rest assure that you would be flying on one of the safest airline at the moment. Plus, $1750 for a F Class ticket is a STEAL! I would grab it! The 744s do not have suites but they do have the 180deg recline sleepers.

Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!
