I was looking at www.iflykansascity.com this morning and looked under press releases. Then clicked the topic titled "external factors challenge planners of terminal improvment project."
There is a list of where the airlines will be when the entire project is done and it showes Delta and SWA as the only tenents of terminal B. I have read or heard in the past that SWA was going to add a number of gates to their operation when the impovment porject is finished. I cant remember how many.
But now Vanguard is out of bussiness and this will leave open space in terminal A, plenty of room for DAL.
I have always thought that SWA could make MCI a large transfer point, much like PHX. After all, it (MCI) is right in the middle of the country and has a population of about 1.7 million people.
So is this the time for SWA to take over all of termial B. They have been hiring lots of people. What do you think?

Not an answer to your question, but
SouthWest will be getting there own concorse "B" at FLL. It will have 9 gates and can be upgraded to 11 if there is ever the need.

I think WN will likely turn MCI into a destination city for the airline to fill the gap caused by the fall of Vanguard. Given that WN has a huge presence at MCI for many years that shouldn't be hard to do.

That is interesting!
By the time this is completed, American will have been housed in all three terminals. It started in A, then with the buyout of TWA, moved to B, now they will end up in C!
MCI is already a fairly easy airport to navigate in. I know there is some disagreement with security being right at thee gates, but I have flown in and out of there over 15 times since the beginning of the year and have never had a problem.

If WN wants to make MCI a transfer point, the security issue has to be worked out.
But I think if WN got a whole terminal to themselves, it would be cost effective to work out that issue, and fairly easily done once its their building and their building only.
Even when you are O&D at MCI security is a pain in the royal rear. Last time I flew out of MCI the departure gate was switched and guess what, I had to go through security again!

Does anyone know how many gates SWA will have in the current plans?

Don't look now, but MCI is already a transfer point for many SWA flights...it has been for a few years now.
