I'm planning a trip to SA next year and was wondering about SAA's A340-600s. Are there any definite plans as to what routes they'll be operated on?
I've heard rumours of HKG and LHR, but LHR is already a 744 route for JNB and CPT and one would assume a particularly busy one. Any other guesses.

Any news on registrations or configurations?

Those rumours about the routes you were hearing are indeed true!

Hong Kong will be the first international route served by SAA's A346's in January following a period of crew training on local trunk routes (JNB to Cape Town and Durban) which begin on 16 December.

Of the 21 frequencies between JNB and CPT to LHR, normally about 16 are operated by B744's. The remainder are served by B742's and B743's. There is a good chance that A346's take over from the classics on a one for one basis on the LHR route.

SAA has chosen a two class 48J + 291Y configuration for the aircraft.

Registrations allocated begin from ZS-SNA

I was actually on to SAA, trying to make my plans for next year. It now appears unfortunately (or fortunately, if your German!) that the 346s will not be coming to LHR until about November 2003, but will instead be operating to FRA from this November. This will be a c/s with Lufty, so I suppose I can buy a ticket with Lufthansa, but make sure I fly on the SAA flight.

However, my aim is to fly to SYD via JNB, so I am wondering if I'll be allowed to take the LHR-JNB sector via FRA. I doubt it. However, they will hopefully have a 346 on some of the CPT flights for pilot training.

Presumably it's still Classics to PER as well?
