ATA has joined the fray and announced they are removing L-1011s from scheduled service and reducing frequencies in several markets. No job cuts yet. http://www.marketwatch.com/news/yhoo/story.asp?source=blq/yhoo&siteid=yhoo&dist=yhoo&guid=%7B06E275B9%2DF87D%2D4BF9%2DB8A2%2DB4097C7A7E29%7D

THE 1011'S WILL BE USED EXCLUSIVELY ON CHARTERS AND MILITARY DUTIES.

Yes, indeed,

ATA is joining the ranks of AA, UA, US, CO, and NW in reducing its scheduled service. Mostly it is to destinations just not drumming in enough revenue such as PIE, PHL, EWR, DEN and FLL. Only one flight per day will be cut from those cities.

The L10s are now going to be moved solely to military charter, despite previous statements that ATA would work to utilize these planes more often.

That now means that ATA's scheduled service fleet will be one of the youngest in the nation, with an average age of less than 2 years (all Boeing 738/752/753s.)

Now it is just a matter of waiting on the ATSB's approval of a $168M cash infusion loan which would help ATA stabalise itself in the current economy.

When I was at JFK on 8/10 one of ATA's L1011's came in under a North American callsign. Was this a charter or were they operating a standard flight?
This was the plane:

I'm not surprised that ATA has phased out the L10 from non-military "charter" flights. After all, ATA just recently started using the 757-300 on the SFO-HNL route on charter flights on behalf of Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays as the L10 replacement.

Interesting how the 5th MDW-DEN flight was started just a few months ago, and now it's being dropped.

From what I've seen, ATA's flights are always going packed full. I guess Frontier is hitting them hard now though......

MDW is a big moneymaker for Frontier. It's I think there 2nd or 3rd most profitable destination.

i'm surprised they droped a flt to ewr, phl, fll. i woulda thought those markets would be pretty good, especially when phl only had 4 flts a day now 3, with usairways starting phl-mdw flts soon

YES ALTHOUGH THE 753 REPLACED THE L10 ON SFO AND LAX TO HNL WE HAVE LOST ALOT OF CAPACITY ON THAT RTE. GRANTED THE L10'S WERENT GOING OUT AT NEAR CAPACITY IN THE OFF SEASON, THIS SUMMER SEASON THOSE FLTS HAVE BEEN BOOKED ALOT, AND WE WISH WE HAD THE L10'S CAPACITY AT THOSE TIMES.

This news really doesn't surprise me anyway. In the coming days the L1011 on the IND-MCO-SJU route was to be replaced with a 757-300. I could see it coming. Hopefully I'll get the chance to get on one of the charter flights, since I will be traveling on official military duty soon.

I think ATA ought to consider getting those ex-TWA PW4000 powered 767-300ERs from AA to replace some of those aging L-1011s.

In case you've missed it, dear friend, ATA has already the 753 as a direct L1011 replacement.

ATA has 4 L1011s sitting at the IAB ramp at IND. I work at ATA. I heard the older 350 series will go and we will get the newer 500s.

However as for the 753 being a replacement for the L1011 that is almost true. ATA is interested in the 767 due to the fact the military likes a widebody

It is to the majority's understanding that the -500's will strictly be used for charters. Since ATA has taken this step, I doubt they would bring the -500's into scheduled service. It would defeat the purpose of their move in the first place. And besides, I bet the -500 isn't any cheaper to operate than the -350's are, not to mention that they are also cutting capacity.

As for the PW-powered 763's, I wouldn't count on it. ATA seems to be interested in brand-new aircraft. Some of the ex-TWA machines aren't that old, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Later,
Chris in Orlando
