Well it may suck for the employee's but hey you got to do what you got to do. These guys are 8 billion in debt and if they don't make a large profit in quarters to come then the Government(tax payers) will have to pay.

This announcement I think was somewhat expected and not really shocking. I wonder what the same announcement was in the past years, just to compare. It's too bad for many of these summer employees, because a lot of them were seriously hoping for permanent positions at Air Canada. Hopefully it will work out well for them in the future.

...as mentioned above, these employees were hired on a "temporary" basis and were aware that this was a possibility. Air Canada said as much when the hiring announcement was made earlier this year.

More indicative of possible slow times ahead is the fact that Air Canada had previously planned to hire quite a few new pilots, and has since sent letters to its "pool" that there wont be any pilots hired for a while. Hopefully we wont see pilots layed off either, as that would indicate even more trouble.
