Does CX Have Rights To Fly Out Of Chinese Cities?

Does CX have rights to fly out of Chinese cities to int'l
destinations?
For example, Shanghai or Beijing to LA, SF, or NY...

Isn't CX technically a Chinese airline?(based in the HKSAR
of PRC)

Cathay Pacific is a Hong Kong registered airline. Hong Kong carries the registration prefix B-H (changed from VR-H after 1 July 1997). Chinese airlines carry the registration prefix B-. So Cathay is not a Chinese airline in the sense of the wor.d

There still exists the "One Country, Two Systems" here in HK. This applies to business as well as politics. So, CX is a HKSAR airline, rather than a Chinese Mainland airline.

I remember CX used to fly to Shanghai or Beijing back in the 1970's with their L-1011's. Can anyone verify that? I remembered that they had that route printed in their flight maps in their in-flight magazine. Or am I mistaken?

Indeed we used to fly to PEK and SHA, but we handed that over to Dragonair instead of competing.....now we want them back.

What do you think the chances are that you will get the routes back? The local papers say that the chances are quite high. It will be great for us passengers. If CX does fly to SHA again, it would be great if you fly into Pudong. That will give us even more flexibility. Do you think the Chinese authorities will allow that?

Hmm. B-H, B-(4 numbers), B-(5 Numbers). All Chinese registrations. Letters are Hong Kong, 4 numbers PRC and 5 numbers ROC.

Both of the 747s below have 4 numbers in their reg#s,
but one belongs to ROC and one belongs to PRC...???

Is there an easier way to tell which side it belongs to
until Taiwan decides to change from the "B" designation?
(not too far off, judging by their president's comments two
days ago about changing to a "non-Chinese" reg number)

The 3 and 4 number registrations are no longer in use in Taiwan amongst the airlines, although they may still be in use with a few government and private aircraft. So, it is pretty safe to use the 4 or 5 number method of determining where the aircraft are from.


As for CX chances, I would say in the long term they are excellent. The government cannot have a reasonable reason for denying Cathay into the mainland market, however, it could well work out to be difficult with a lot of red tape. None of the mainland airlines are going to like an airline like Cathay suddenly competing on their turf.
