I was there last year and was also very impressed! The view from the Crist Statue is incredible.
I tried to check in at Santos Dumont for a flight to Brasilia only to learn that it would leave in 40 minutes from the international airport.
No problemo, I got my boarding pass and rushed by bus to through the traffic to get to the airport 10 minutes before departure and still made it! I love Brasil!
The trip was followed by a great night landing at Santos Dumont: Full reverse and then a nice walk back to the busy terminal!

By far the best way to spot at Santos Dumont is when you're taking the ferry from Centro to Niteroi. The ferry runs right below the flight path of approaching planes, literally a stones throw away at times.
Another good vantage is from Pao de Asucar, where you can view planes taking off and making a sharp bank to the left or right to avoid hitting the mountain. Truly amazing.

I did actually see the take-offs and landings from Sugar Loaf. We could watch the planes coming in over Flamengo and the banking around the bay to land. I also found the waterfront area in front of the Modern Art Museum really quite wonderful.
