Hello to all,
I know that Delta acquired some Dc-10's with western in the 80's. But I've recently seen a picture of a Delta DC-10 from the 70's. Under what circumstances were they operated? (I thought Delta had opted for the L-1011)

In addition to the Western machines, Delta leased (if memory serves) the DC10's for the duration of time prior to L1011 deliveries. I believe this is the case--simply a substitution for the L1011's prior to their deliveries. If I am wrong, I'll no doubt be corrected as efficiently as possible!

I'm not sure whey they were originally acquired but I flew on one between MIA and ATL on Sept 2, 1974. I remember that the flight attendents were having difficulty getting used to using carts to serve the lunch meal in the short amount of time for the flight.

At one point during the development of the L-1011 the whole program was in jeopardy due to the collapse of Rolls Royce. Delta hedged it's bets by ordering the DC-10 just in case the TriStar got cancelled. After the U.K. government bailed out Rolls Royce and the U.S. government bailed out Lockheed the program went ahead. Delta, which had already ordered 747s, became the first airline to operate all three widebody types. "The Sporty Game," by John Newhouse, is a fascinating book about the whole DC-10 versus L-1011 story.

The DC-10's in the early 70's were on short term lease from UAL. As mentioned above this was due to the delay in the L-1011 program, and with the economic slowdown caused by the oil embargo of 73-74, UAL was happy to sublet a few to DAL.

The 5 original DL DC-10s were MSN 47965 to 47969 LNs 49, 64, 67, 74 and 80. They were registered N601DA to N605DA and all were series 10s. As my DC-10 database was corrupted last year and I haven't had time to fix it I can't give much more info.
Sigh. Another project.
I am glad I was around to fly before de-regulation.

Anybody have pictures of the inside of either a 70's era Delta DC-10 or an 80's era? I almost flew HNL to LAX once in 1989, but my parents decided to switch to the HNL-DFW flight so they could fly Business Class. The DC-10's were not outfitted with it.

You can distinguish the 70s vintage DC-10s from the 80s vintage inherited from Western Airlines by the color of the nose and other more subtle differences in the livery. In the 70s DC-10, the nose of the aircraft is mostly white, while the 80s DC-10 has the "black face" that was later applied to all Delta aircraft with the widget livery.

The 70s ones were done up just like the DL L-1011s originally were. In F class this means the cloth seats with brownish/red and salt&pepper colours (I think anet has some pics of the L10 like this). The coach cabin had the yellow, orange and blue covers which were common to the DL Tristar as well, and it was in a 2-4-2 config which was typical for the DC-10 and L10 until the late 70s. The seats were basically the same ones as DL chose for the L-1011 (not United-style seats) but the DC-10 had some differences, for example the oxygen masks in seatback compartments and the little twiddly air vents mounted in the seatback in front of you, etc. At an airliner trade show I bought a couple of black and white pics that I'm told were taken by DL, maybe if you wrote to ATL they would send you one. I also saw some pics taken by a guy who flew on one, that's why I know the colours. BTW, DL installed those coat compartments between the two middle seats in coach that were really a Tristar feature (EA and DL had them). As far as I know this was the only time they were put on a DC-10.
The 80s cabin was basically ex-Western, with blue leather in F and coach cloth in grey or blue with little red and white doodads on them. I'm told that this was the cabin WA adopted when they went to the silver scheme 'Bud Lite'. (Before that I hear the cabins were psychedelic orange and red, no thanks).

In 1973, Delta was operating 747's, DC-10's, and L-1011's simultaneously.
In addition, they were also flying DC-8's (-50's and -61's), DC-9's (-10's and -30's), 727-200's, Convair 880's, FH-227's, and Lockheed L-100's (civil Hercules); the 727-200's and FH-227's came to them via the Northeast Airlines acquisition. Then, they were the most profitable airline in the US with good service and work force with a very high morale.

Here we go back down memory lane! I can recall the only time I flew on a DL DC-10 from ATL-LGA back in the spring of '74. The flt left early in the am(around 6:30 or 7:00) and had at most 60-70 pax on it. It was my 1st time on a wide body jet and as a child, the cabin seemed like a huge living room to me. My late uncle, who made our reservations, thought that we would be on 747, but later realized that we were landing at LGA not JFK. The DL 747 we saw at the gate next to our flight was headed to LAX.
