A panel from a Air New Zealand 747-400 fell off shortly after takeoff. On a routine flight from Auckland to Japan. The panel was from over the top of one of the right engines. The panel which wasn't of any structural importance landed on a street near a busy Auckland Highway. Two glass delivery men watched astounded at the panel fell from the Jumbo just meters ahead of them. The flight crew was told by the passengers that there was a panel missing. The captain went and had a look and decided to turn back to Auckland. The plane landed safely 2 hours later with 358 people aboard
uninjured. The passengers were transferred onto another plane and took off 4 and a half hours later. Air New Zealand are looking over the incident closely examined by the CAA.

It was either NBS, NBT or NBU as I saw it had Rolls Royce engines, I guess that it was NZ34? if so then it will be late getting into Christchurch tomorrow

I'm sure that will change!! The flight is due to arrive at NRT 2050 and leave at 2220 usually it arrives at 1625 and departs at around 1830. I guess it will arrive in AKL at around 1445-1500ish instead of the usual 1055, it will probably get to CHC at about 1200-1215ish instead of 0815 or 0820.

Usually the aircraft on the NRT-CHC service goes to LAX at 1600 so I wonder if there will be an aircraft change or if it will depart slightly later.

Does Air NZ have some sort of pattern with falling panels? I seem to remember something falling off a 767 (NZ102) inbound to Auckland a few months back...

HOLY SHIT, TALK ABOUT CONINCEDENCE.

When i was at the airport yeterday (1930-2130) I saw this exact same aircraft, located at Gate 4. It was pushed back half way, but then suddenly stopped for like 10-15mins (anyone know why??)
It them carried on regularly to the Hangers at the end of runway 5.
Gosh, cant believe it actually! I didnt see any markings on the wing. And i must also mention...GREAT LOAD!  Smile!!
Also, Thai Airways MD-11 is the best looking aircraft i have seen in my entire life, and with it parked at Gate 2..oh it was marvellous viewing!

PS - TG's M11 does look beautiful - but believe me, it's not the most comfortable bird to fly on :P (spoken as a true veteran)

Hey Mikey gate 4 can't take 747's! Were you there on Friday night? I was there on Thursday night from 1930 to 2130ish! ZK-NCF was at gate 4 and it was having some checks done above the starboard engine.

SUI is due in AKL at 1420, and NZ6 to LAX is still scheduled to depart on time at 1600!

While I was there on SAT I thought they were playing Musical Jumbo's when NBU was towed to the jet base and SUH which was at the jet base was towed to the terminal, this was all before I heard the news.

Yes TG's MD11's look great!!

BTW TG992 which 744 did NZ2 on Thrusday night 22nd AUG? It was on gate 10 so I didn't get the rego. I guess it wasn't SUH, SUI or NBU.

Just on the aside topic re. Thai's MD11s.

They are waaaaaaaaaaay more comfortable than their old barge painted 744. And Md11s look so damn cool!

Scotty - it was ZK-NBS operating NZ2 on 22 Aug.

NBU will be back to service on 28th operating NZ6.
