Cessna comes close to hitting DC-9
Monday, August 26, 2002
TORONTO -- Officials are looking into a near-miss incident at Toronto's Pearson airport.
A Northwest airlines flight and a small plane came dangerously close to colliding yesterday.
Nav Canada officials say a Cessna had aborted a landing attempt after reporting a landing gear problem.
It was circling around when it strayed too close to Northwest Flight 971, which was taking off.
The co-pilot of the DC-9 saw the Cessna coming directly at the airliner and the jet quickly took evasive action.
None of the 94 passengers were injured, although a Northwest spokesman said some were shaken up.
The plane then flew on to Minneapolis where it landed without further incident.
The Transportation Safety Board said it will review the flight tapes and determine whether an investigation is warranted.
