Hello all!

Alaska has announced new service to Miami (MIA) and NYC, I think thats to EWR.

I am very proud of them! I sure hope they keep expanding like this!

Lets hear what you guys have to say!

It'll be nice to see a new carrier in the NYC area even though it's going to EWR. I assume the flights will be going to SEA. Do you think they will be able to give NW,UA,CO, and DL enough competion to be profitable on these segments?

I am trying to book a flight for November now, and the flights are just about booked!

I sure think they will be plenty of competition!

Lets hope they don't make the same mistake Mark Air and Wein made.

They could use a 737-700 since it's range is close to 3200 miles. The distance from MIA-SEA is a little over 2700 miles. AA uses their 737-800's from IAD & ORD to the west coast so range should'nt be much of a problem.

The equip is a 73G, Alaska has NO 737-800 (right now). The 73G has long enough legs to make the Miami run with no problem.

As for the competition issue out of NYC, I think (but I'm not sure) that there will be a codeshare with Continental, and NWA. I'm sure a codeshare with American will also happen down to Miami.

Both the 700 and 900 have the range for it, but the press release says it will be the 700.

Drewwright - While both Wein and Markair were guilty of expanding without a clear understanding of what markets they were trying to serve, what really killed Wein was the fight between the owner/CEO (can't remember his name) and the unions (specifically the Teamsters). Wein wanted pay cuts, the Teamsters said no, so the airline was shut down. When service was restarted, it was only at a fraction of its former size, with no clear business plan. Needless to say, they didn't last long.

Alaska does not have any 738's now, and I think they will start with the B73G (700) to the new destinations. Maybe a 739 in the future.
