I have not flown out of Heathrow in a couple years, I actually usually fly into and out of Gatwick. On friday I will be flying out on Virgin's afternoon flight to Newark, from Terminal 3. I was wondering if there are any good places in the airport to view the ramp or runways and perhaps take some photos. I know that Gatwick now has the Sky View... any similar area at Heathrow? Thanks for any suggestions.

Heathrow has a spectator's gallery next to the Queen's Building and Terminal2 which has good views of 27L/9R(currently have 9R takeoffs). It is free to get in and opens around 9 am and closes around dusk.

Yes you get a good view from Queen's Building but pray for clouds because
the view is to the south. I was there in september last year and got 5-6
rolls of film with very nice pictures but then again, it was a day with heavy
clouds.

Hello spotters, I was wondering if you could take photos from approaching airlines from the "Que-Gardens" (don't know the correct writing)?

Kew Gardens is on south west london, ain't been there for a while, so cant remember as to what sort of spotting can be done from here.

Your best bet at LHR is the viewing gallery, it's free and has good views of the runway (27L)

I guess you mean Kew Gardens.....Well yes you can get pictures from there, but the aircraft will be difficult to photograph as they are still at least 2 mins away from LHR which I guess means they will be at 1500ft+.Try Hounslow Heath, or better still Hatton Cross tube station/the long stay car park (depending which runway is in use).

As for Terminal 3, don't expect to take pictures there as it is terrible for that-you can see very little from the terminal. The viewing deck above T2 is your best bet.

You can see tons of BA 747's at LHR, I'll tell you that!

Terminal 3 airside is awesome, you can photo every widebody imaginable. T3 arrivals/departures are bogus, too crowded and no views of aircraft either, only a glimpse of 27L through the cafe in the T3 departures.

Thanks for all your help. I'm staying in Essex, and planning to leave about 9:30 AM for my 4:00PM flight, so I'll have plenty of time to wander around... maybe I'll take a strole to T2. Thanks again.

Hey Vgn,

Looks like im gonna be at LHR Friday too, spotting with mum  Wink/being sarcastic

If my calculations are right, heres the runway organisation for Friday.

Morning takeoffs before 3pm will be on 27L
Morning landings before 3pm will be on 27R

Afternoon takeoffs after 3pm will be on 27R
Afternoon landings after 3pm will be on 27L.

Now, thats good and bad.

1) Late afternoon (1700) has the sun behind you from the top of T2, so u can shoot the landings on 27L well  Big thumbs up

2) You'll be taking off from 27R, so cant shoot you  Sad

If im wrong, someone please correct me!!

Shots of 27R are possible but not easy, I've had some decent results down at the holding point. You need to be on the North Perimeter Road adjacent to where the aircraft commence their take off roll, and you'll need to find a way to beat the fence-I use my bike as a step ladder and have a lens that fits through the fence. There are other places I'm sure but what is most important is the strength of the sun, a thin cloud layer is ideal otherwise you get problems with the shadows.

The emergency access gates at the end of 27R (opposite the long stay car park) is another good spot but you'll need a good zoom lens!

Qantas,

Wont have a bike with me, or a ladder :-(

But, when the 27R app is on, ill go to the roundabout by the BA maint base, which is where these pics were taken, i was standing alongside Alex when he shot this.

I have an hour or two to pass at LHR as well, although it'll be at T4, where I'll be capturing BA's afternoon flight to Newark.

Any chance of viewing anything there? I HAVE to get a glimpse of stand V14, does anyone know what time Concorde is placed there?

Looks like it will be V14, she leaves the gate at 1030 Local, so she should be there 0930 ish? LHR regulars help out plz  Wink/being sarcastic

For the benefit of CPH-R, here is a link to a picture on my homepage of Concorde on stand at LHR T4 which I took while on my way to board my JFK flight. It was taken from the pier in between the main part of T4 and the newer part which includes gates 18-22.

And if you look on the markings on the ramp in my picture you will see the letters V14 painted just ahead of G-BOAD.This aircraft was in fact the spare and was parked next to V14 which is where the actual flight left from (at 1030am).

BA777, I sent you an e-mail... I'd really like to meet up with you, but I don't know if it'll be possible.
