I just want an update on the expansion at CLE. I know the new runway is supposed to be finished soon, but I have not heard anything lately about extending the parallel one in place from 8,999ft. to 11,000+. This was part of the plan as I recall.

Other Questions:
-back of Concourse D, what's the deal?
-are they moving the international gate and adding more?
-IX Center, when are they going to knock the f....... thing down?
-If that goes are they going to build a third parallel runway like they planned along the back side of Concourse D?
-any plans for terminal expansion(there was a plan for a mid-field terminal)?
-rumors and/or facts on future airline service?
-will CO and CO Express bring back routes once the runway is down(mainly the ones CO Express dropped like SBN, TOL, AZO, CAK, ect...)?
-CO rumors and/or facts on future nonstop service?
-any BKL rumors or plans?

Feel free to add any other additional info. Thank You!!!

-are they moving the international gate and adding more? Im assuming you means customs, in that case, no.

-IX Center, when are they going to knock the f....... thing down? 2016

-If that goes are they going to build a third parallel runway like they planned along the back side of Concourse D? No. It's not possible what with a major road, a major interstate, and 2 major rail lines in the way.

-any plans for terminal expansion(there was a plan for a mid-field terminal)? Just terminal rehab.. we have no mid-field to build anything on.

-rumors and/or facts on future airline service? USA 3000 is starting operations this fall and is planning on operating a base at CLE.

-will CO and CO Express bring back routes once the runway is down(mainly the ones CO Express dropped like SBN, TOL, AZO, CAK, ect...)? More than likely, yes. But not for a couple years.

-CO rumors and/or facts on future nonstop service? More transatlantic once 6R/24L is extended to 11,000 around 2005.

-any BKL rumors or plans? Still up in the air.

That's all i can think of off the top of my head.

The existing parallel will be extended 11,500, only after the new runway is completed. The new runway is expected to open in December, but only the first 6000 feet i believe. The final 3000 feet will be finished when the Abrams Creek relocation project is completed, expected date is April 2004 i believe.

Back of D. It was designed to be converted into gates with jetways for ERJs after the props left, but this has been put on the sideburner until traffic improves. No idea when this work will start.

Terminal expansion and international gate. CO wants customs to be moved to concourse c for better connections to other flights. Before 9/11, there were rumors or an expansion of concourse c out towards the fed-ex ramp, and this expansion would include a new customs area and i believe more international gates. A new terminal would be great, but there just isnt the room for one. I seriously feel Cleveland should look to build a new airport, either in Lorain County, Medina County, or on an artificial island on the lake.

IX center. 2016 is when the deal with the park group expires i believe, but the city can knock it down at any time, they just need to continue to compinsate the park group. I dont expect to see it come down before that date.

3rd parallel. Designed to be a runway expressly for regional jets, especially Continental Express. The plan is to build it over the site of the ix center and would require the demolition of parts of Cargo road and Concourse D. This will not be done until at least 2016. If push comes to shove. 237 could be tunneled but the plans ive seen show that roads would be uneffected.

Future airlines. USA 3000 is planning a start sometime in the near future. JetBlue is also being tossed around a bit. The city is adding more baggage caurosels and i believe adding more check in desks.

CO and COEX have both stated that they will not add more service untill the runway is open. I would expect no increase untill the spring schedual is announced, where more frequencies on some RJ routes and RJ routes that were cut before to cities still served by CO to the other hubs. Mainline might have a small increase, most likely in frequencies, not new destinations. Id like to see new flights to PIT, SAN, SLC, and SAT to start. Another idea would be flights to ILG (Wilmington DE) because of the influence of MBNA. MBNA has their headquarters in ILG and has 2,000 employees in CLE. I know ILG is close PHL, but it also gives a different option for Delaware, Philly, and MBNA fliers. A ERJ-135 would work well on this route. Id allso like to see COEX put some pressure on USAirways by moving into some of their markets in PA, NY, VA, WV, and MD. Some of the cities that CO has abandoned will probably not be restarted like CAK and YWR. Other flights that were halted would probably be restarted at a later date. Rumors have also been floating around of an eventual flight to AMS and possible CDG. These wont be a reality for a couple of years though. Last I heard, the numbers on the CLE-LGW flight were quite good, and tickets are not exactly cheap for it either.

BKL. rumors have been to either close it and turn it into a park, residential, or commercial area with museums (which i oppose) or to leave it as it is. The Army Corps of engineers are dumping dirt off of Burke so a new runway can eventually be built. I think if COEX placed a few ERJ-135s at burke and fly to LGA, ORD, DCA, EWR, and maybe a few other cities to allow business travelers get closer to the city it would be successful.

b>I know the new runway is supposed to be finished soon, but I have not heard anything lately about extending the parallel one in place from 8,999ft. to 11,000+.
Phase I involves building the new parallel (in progress.) Phase II involves extending the current 8,999 ft. runway to 10,000 ft. (NOT 11,500 ft.) Phase III, which has not yet received federal approval, involves construction of a third parallel. (If you're wondering, our current 6C/24C will be decommissioned.)

Other Questions:
-back of Concourse D, what's the deal?

This was designed to be converted to jetway space once the turboprops were gone. Right now the RJs still taxi in and discharge pax to the ramp. They could still do the conversion, but the airport has other priorities right now.

-are they moving the international gate and adding more?
We currently have three customs gates: two at the end of Concourse A (A12, A13) and one at the root of Concourse B (B1). A12 and A13 double as charter and g/a customs gates, and B1 is dedicated for Air Canada Jazz (though United Airlines occasionally brings in one of its regionals there.) Not much use for more international gates right now, as our only transatlantic is still CO 66/67 (CLE-LGW, LGW-CLE) and our other international flights are with ERJs (COEx) and a little DH-8 (Jazz)!

-IX Center, when are they going to knock the f....... thing down?
Well, everyone above said 2016, for some reason I thought it was 2012. I guess it's a fifteen year agreement. In any case, the City of Brook Park still gets revenue from the building for a set period, and the City of Cleveland cannot tear down the building until that agreement expires. At this rate, they won't need to, since the current runway construction is so far behind...

-If that goes are they going to build a third parallel runway like they planned along the back side of Concourse D?
Yes. It will go through the IX Center site. The cargo ramps will be moved south of it. I envision the runway located south of the new Consolidated Deicing Facility (located at the bend of Postal Road) and extending southeast (parallel to the existing runways) through the area where a whole slew of houses will be torn down.
Remember guys, the airport is going to expand southward to Sheldon Road. There will be plenty of room for a new 7,000 ft. runway if it starts at the border of Rocky River Reservation.

-any plans for terminal expansion(there was a plan for a mid-field terminal)?
Currently there just isn't any room for terminal expansion. There will never be room for a midfield terminal, as the parallel runways are still going to be very close together (parallel ILS approaches will still be impossible.) The existing terminal has undergone renovation in recent years. Currently the terminal roadway is under renovation. And the existing terminal is roughly 1/3 south from the northeast end of the runways, 2/3 north of the southwest end. That's probably as close to midfield as you can get.

-rumors and/or facts on future airline service?
I haven't heard any. All I know is we scared away Spirit Airlines a few years ago... I want them back!

-will CO and CO Express bring back routes once the runway is down(mainly the ones CO Express dropped like SBN, TOL, AZO, CAK, ect...)?
The CAK route is probably gone for good. CO realized that quite a few people were using CAK departures to save money on tickets even though they were just as close to CLE.
IMHO, I think CO should resume CAK-CLE service, but with an express bus like they run ABE-EWR. That way, the people who really need to leave from CAK can do it, and those who were using the system can choose between the hassle of riding a bus and going straight to CLE instead.
I don't know about the rest of them.

-CO rumors and/or facts on future nonstop service?
In the cuts CO announced recently, CLE was supposed to be the least affected.

-any BKL rumors or plans?
As you read above, quite a few people think BKL should just crash and burn. I agree with the others that we should keep it and encourage CO to move some COEx service downtown, catering to business folk. I have envisioned service from BKL to these various cities, for business and government: CMH, DET, MDW, LGA, DCA, MDT, IND, LEX.

Cheers,
redngold
