What do you think the airlines will do next in terms of improving passenger comfort / entertainment now that IFE systems and sleeper beds in business have been introduced. Maybe we will have to wait for the A380 to see the next big step. Will it be gyms, bars and increased seat pitch for economy?

With longer routes being introduced, I think Airlines would be nuts not to improve their coach cabins. As it is, longer flights are generally more expensive, so more people will be flying economy class.

I think some things that could be introduced are:
-Copying AA on MRTC, it makes a difference, trust me.
-Wider seats
-Larger recline
-Foot rests
-Enhanced beverage services to acompany the meal services.
-Head rests

As it is, there are some routes that economy class is plain inhumane. Airlines are packing people in like sardines, it just kills me to realize this. If airlines don't improve their economy class products when the A380, B747XXX,A345/6 come out, I will do my best to avoid those airlines.

BLink182, headrest are definitely a nice touch and many airlines already do offer them. As for the footrest, I think they are redundant. I have a lot more room for my legs when I just stretch them out under the seat in front of me. The footrest will limit the space for my legs. So I personally don't use the footrest and am glad if it stays up.

As for the IFE, I would love to have a chat on the PTV. Ok, you would need a little keyboard (maybe on the back of the phone) but it'd be fun to chat with other passengers on board.

BBC World is now avaible for airlines to pick up on a new statillite service.Airlines picking up tv signials will be a change as will be Boeings connexion service, allowing for broadband internet access for pax.

On long-haul, maybe somebody will experiment with providing First Class passengers with roomette-style privacy or in-flight showers. Business and coach passengers might, at best, get modest improvements or none at all.

As for short- and medium-haul, expect things to continue the way they've been going in recent years. It's probably a matter of time until someone discontinues IFE because it doesn't generate enough revenue, and gyms probably won't be too common -- gym equipment adds significantly to the plane's weight.

Gee, all of you folks who recall the intro of the B747 to airline service might be having a bit of deja vu when reading about the A380. The 747 was going to have private rooms, duty free shops, casinos, showers, restaurants and bars, exercise facilities, you name it. When it came down to the actual airplane in service, those things disappeared on the drawing board and the few attempts to implement them were quickly reconfigured to add extra coach seats or cargo space. Revenue is generated by flying pax or cargo to a destination and nothing else adds up; cram the cabin with seats and load the holds with stuff was, and is, the rule.

I only experienced one upper deck lounge on a 747 early in its service life and it was a terrible waste of pax capacity. I never saw another one and I definitely never saw a gym, hockey rink, shopping mall, NASCAR track or the like.

When it goes into service, most 380s are going to be sardine cans built to get the most seat or cargo revenue per mile.

You are right though, the A380 will be 100% seats. I think it was the Singapore Airlines CEO that even admitted it. He said something along the lines of,

"(Singapore Airlines isn't going to fill the A380s with gyms, shops etc. The reason we are ordering this airplane is for seats. There will be improvements made, eg- wider seats, more legroom. However, the plane will be filled with seats, not far fetched things like pools,libraries, and shops etc.)"

In regards to an economy class footrest, I think the legrest pictured here is a good idea, definitely better than the little fold down things on the seat in front.

I think the future is going to see a proliferation of Premium Economy classes, as well as increased legroom in economy class itself (as efficiency of aircraft gets better, the costs of having less seats will be countered by this, so air fares will stay much the same)

It is possible we may see full fare carriers offering an economy minus too - sort of a charter configuration, less room, less service, perhaps pay for meals etc, with cheaper fares.

Finally, I think a market that should be watched with interest, though I for one can't predict how it will turn out, is that of all business class private jet flights, like those Lufthansa is operating DUS-EWR, and those Virgin Atlantic had hinted at last year.

I agree with you that MRTC does have significant changes. 36' vs. 32' seat pitch on long haul is really much better.

Wider seats? maybe an inch or two but not too narrow aisles too but unless if a person i really big (no offense to anyone), they do not need wider seats when compared to what we have today onboard, say, SQ B777s.

Larger recline is also very helpful but more legroom and at the same time more recline would cost the airline more so even if airlines do, i do not predict that they will add a lot to it.

Footrests shown by VirginFlyer which is onboard ANZ is pretty impressive as opposed to what I experienced on SQ B772's Y class. Headrest onboard SQ's B77s are very very good.

I think meal service is already good enough but always we can improve it but I think it costs a lot to keep more food on the a/c esp. on long haul, they are heavier, and need to keep them warm etc etc. right?
