Don't forget Renaissance at Atlanta --- right by the cargo ramp.
Or Hotel Lofleidir at Reykavik (not Keflavik) where the pilots ferrying commuter aircrafts across the Atlantic walks right from the aircraft to the hotel reception (and the bar...).

Well, you won't get close-up shots of planes on the ground but ...
The Marriott Courtyard in Tempe, AZ is a great place if you want to see planes on final approach for, or just after takeoff from Sky Harbor. If you're interested only in getting good pictures, you can get some decent shots, depending on the lighting/time of day. When making reservations, you would want to request a room with a porch on the third floor, facing 5th street. Aside from the spotting, there are a lot of great restaurants just a short walk from the hotel, and ASU.
So, if you're interested in seeing many, many, many America West and Southwest planes, this is what I can recommend. It's my favorite, anyway.

Four come to mind:
- Renaissance LHR. Third floor room; when 27R in use for landings. Wow!
- Regal Hotel HKG; room overlooking apron - expensive, but great shots possible (and a very nice hotel),
- Marroad, NRT. Possibly the best. Wonderful views right down the length of 16/34 (now 16L/34R) - great shots of arriving or departing aircraft. A++
- Stamford SYD. Haven't been there, but I believe it's very good.
The best thing about airport hotels now, of course, is that there'll be no security thugs pushing their weight around. They're unlikely to be knocking on your door!
It might be a good idea for a separate category of photos: show them by the hotel from which they've been taken?
"What are we going to do tonight, Brain?" "Same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world".

I stayed at the Hyatt at MCO once. Beautiful view of RWY 17/35 as well as the two newest airside terminals. Most of the international traffic and 747s use this runway that the hotel faces. There are also many public areas in the hotel that afford good views.

The Maho Bay Resort in Saint Maarten... Get a room on one of the top two floors, on the southern side of the building. When the weather is clear you can see the heavies from as far away as 5 or 6 NM (my best guess) and you can follow them all the way down onto the runway... It's quite a view. A 200mm lens and it'll seem like you're sitting right on top of them! ...And as you can tell from the number of photos, there is no shortage of spotting opportunities at SXM.

The Marriot that is directly in the center of IAH is pretty decent depending on what room you get. On the top floor there is a revolving restaurant and bar which provides a 360 degree view of the airfield.

I think there must be something about Renaissance hotels that put them close to airports. The Renaissance Hotel in STL provides an excellent view of the east side of the airport. It is especially nice if they are using the 30 runways, the approaches are right in front of you, and you can clearly see all of the aircraft on the ground waiting for takeoff. Very nice view.

Back in 1980, when I was 9 years old, my dad and I drove to O'Hare (from Milwaukee) and spent the night in the O'Hare Hilton as my birthday present. Dad requested a room overlooking the airport, which we got. We spent the day wondering around the airport and got inside several planes for a quick tour. Great present.
A few years back I stayed at one of the major hotels at LAX and had a nice view of planes landing on the two northern runways.

Best hotels for spotting aircraft...
-Hyatt MCO-havent stayed there, but it looks good.
-Hilton ORD-it affords pretty good views.
-Hilton CDG-havent stayed there, looks pretty good though from the outside.
-Renaissance ATL-Awesome, great unobstructed views of the entire runway.
-Maho Bay Beach Resort SXM-My favorite, if you ever go to St. Maarten you must stay here! The aircraft come in very low over the beautiful bay. It is truly picturesque.
-Marriott EWR-alright, the room my family got there was fairly disappointing.
-Marriott BOS-Not too much here.
-There are a ton of hotels around LAX that look like that they have good views.
-Hyatt DFW-good views, the hotel is designed like a "T", make sure you stay at the top part of the "T" overlooking the runway.
-Marriott IAH-Looks awesome, if you are a fan of Continental.

Oh and btw, Mcmahonsmr - I too stayed at the Radisson SAS at Manchester, but I found it generally poor. All of the rooms on the right hand side had little to no view, and even the left were a way away from the apron and more importantly runway .

I'm staying in the Furama LAX in Oct. Does anyone know if this hotel will provide any type of view of approaching or departing aircraft. Any other suggestions of good budget hotels around LAX would be good

My favorite is the Marriott at SFO. Gives you a great view of aircraft on approach to 28L/28R. There is also a great park right in front of the hotel with a long walking path that you can take all the way down to the fence at 1R. They also have benches so you can just sit and watch the action. Very relaxing!
