I am frankly pretty suprised that no airline has make an effort to compete with FI on flights from the US to KEF. Iceland is one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world and I think that maybe at the very least a thrice weekly service from a U.S. city, perhaps a summer only service? Does Iceland make slot access hard to foreign carriers? Think about it...there is NO competition on those routes. The only airlines that I could see possibly giving KEF a shot eventually are DL (maybe a 757 or 738 from JFK or ATL), CO (a 737NG from EWR), and US (a A319 or A320 from PHL). Its just suprising that no one has given it a shot at it.

The only international carrier at KEF is Icelandair. No other European or US carrier flies there.
One reason why Go (the only other carrier that served the island) terminated services at KEF as airport charges are amongst the highest globally. Icelandair has a basic monopoly on handling at the airport.

If I am correct at one time LH operated a flight from FRA to KEF. And there are charter airlines that fly from KEF as well. It is a fast growing tourist attraction and certainly will warrant service sometime in the near future but given the current climate it is just toooooo risky to start up a service to Iceland. FI is a reasonably good carrier and would be a step above the run of the mill European carriers......Icelanders in particular would be content to travel with FI given the decent service they provide. An American carrier would have to offer something novel to Icelanders in order to succeed in that market. PTVs would be a necessity on that type of route. That also is a strictly point to point flight. FI is still going to be the only transfer airline and it sure will be cheaper to do FI from JFK to KEF to GLA than to do DL/FI from JFK to KEF to GLA. I think the only carrier that might consider this is CO.....but not for a while.
