Why do airlines have the same aircraft type from Boeing and Airbus like Cathay Pacific has:

Boeing 747-400
Boeing 777-200
Boeing 777-300
and they also have the
Airbus A340-300
Airbus A340-600
Airbus A330-300

Singapore Airlines
Boeing 747-400
Boeing 777-200ER
and they also have the
Airbus A340-300
Airbus A340-500

I always thought it was just politics for airlines to have Boeing and Airbus in there fleets. There are other airlines that have a fleets like this too!

Do any of these airlines plan to retire some of these aircraft so they have one aircraft for each route type?

I hope this question makes since!!!  Smile

Airlines have airplanes from Airbus and Boeing with nearly the same specifications, because every aircraft has its own range and cargo capacity which the airlines can choose for high or low density routes.

hope this helps you

What about Air France, they have large fleets of Airbus A340-300 and they also fly the 772ER. They are not planning on retiring the A343 either. As for SQ, they are retiring their A343 and replacing them with 777. Some of them have already been buy back to Boeing when they purchased the 777 from them. As for the A340-500, SQ order those for long range operations to the United States directly from Singapore.
