In the British Empire, it was almost certainly the De Havilland DH-82 Tiger Moth (mostly used by the military, who did the vast bulk of training in those days). If you are asking about France (which I see from your profile), then I am sorry, I can't help you, though I am sure there were probably a few French types.
P.S. completely off topic, but I spent a few days in Chamberry about 2 years ago - nice place. One thing I remember is the statue of the elephants - "Quatre Sans Culs" - I have some photos lying around on my computer somewhere.

That is exactly what I was looking for.
I just needed a plane that I could refer to in a sentence like "This plane was nothing like the Cessna 172 he used to fly in the 70s", although as I'm putting the flight training in the 30s, it will rather be "This plane was nothing like the Tiger Moth he used to fly in the 30s".
I was not asking specifically about France, actually m character will have traveled a lot, and a few years in England will fit perfectly in his background.

And oh yes, Chambery is a very nice place. Esp. if you're in aviation. The small 'country airport' become an overcrowded International Airport during the winter.
