Exactly how big is the new Chep Lak Kok airport on Lantau Island (west of Hong Kong Island?) I was at the image gallery at www.hkairport.com and I saw an overview of the airport. I dunno, maybe I was hallucinating, but the airport seemed to take up the whole island. How this is possible I don't know. Does anyone have any info? Thanx.

Chek Lap Kok is an separate island on the north side of Lantau Island joining Lantau by two roads only. The airport took up the whole island, which 3/4 of them are reclaimied

The whole CLK is on a man made island, exclusively built for the airport. The airport is as big as the whole kowloon peninsula, 4 times as big as Kai Tak.

CLK is simply -massive-. In a word..if you've been there and/or connected thru there you know exactly what I mean. It's an -incredible- airport. Been thru there several times over the past few years and I prefer it to Narita, Taipei or Seoul.

-NRT is far too over-crowded. (but it's heaven for widebody watchers ).
-Taipei isnt planned very well at all but for some weird reason..isnt crowded..(LOL!)
(I absolutely love Kaohsiung Intl down in southern Taiwan..modern and spacious as ever)
-Seoul is going to be replaced soon by Inchon Intl so that should be interesting..Kimpo isnt fun to go thru though.

I must say Singapore ranks above all by leaps and bounds in many ways though. SIN is much more passenger friendly in my view, the layout there is pure genius. Shops sprinkled amongst the concourses along with an extensive shopping center in the terminals. Security is straight forward and very thorough..but incredibly it doesnt impede at all in your shopping or sightseeing experience there. It's probably the best airport I've ever been thru. I recommend travel thru there just to see what I mean.

I'm at the airport every week plane spotting. As people have said the Airport Island (Chep Lap Kok) was a small island. This was flattened and rocks and other material was dumped to form the island. The main part of the terminal is on what was Chep lap kok island.

Its hard to explain how big it is, all i can say is during Hong Kongs bad visibility you cant even see the tower from the terminal, the tower is in the centre of the airport. Haeco is at the far end. Its miles away. Not only has the airport been built but so to has the town of Tung Chung, this town is already expanding fast. The First McDonalds opens soon !!!

If you were talking about Singapore Changi Airport, I've been there. I love that place! Those automatic soap dispensers in the bathrooms are so cool!

The site below has the exact data on the thing. Something like 1255 hectares. Huge. The terminal area is 15 times bigger than the old HK airport.

One thing about this airport is that it is a crosswind airport and I heard that it is pretty hard to land there during rough weather (like the Mandarin Airlines MD-11 crash which was caused by crosswind and windshear). That I guess makes this new airport just slightly less dangerous than the infamous IGS approach of the old one.
