The Financial Times' sister newspaper in France, Les €chos, has learnt that a wide ranged alliance between Air France and KLM has been planned with the former taking a stake in the latter.

A deal could be signed before the year end. Such a deal would end KLM's search for a nice €uropean partner. Unsucessful merger talks between itself and British Airways and Alitalia have failed.

The scale of this deal would be far larger than between Air France and Alitalia, where both will take a 3% stake in eachother. Any deal would need the consent of the Dutch government who has a 13% stake in KLM.

"The time of big alliances has come" said Gilles de Robien, the French transport minister. He also said, "the notion of national flag carriers will lose its importance. It is necessary to give Air France the means to make itself felt so that it can participate in the process of European air transport consolidation".

great!!

this way, instead of flying separate 747-300 and A340 to SXM "princess juliana" they will combine in one single AF A380 Big grin

KL and AF are great and respectable airlines and a working alliance would be an incredible weapon on the market

The way it was reported in the Netherlands it sounds more like a takeover than cooperation...
Deal will be mostly one-sided, with AF becoming part owner of KLM in exchange for some cooperation on operational issues.

Not good, as it spells the end for KLM as an independent player I'm afraid. They'll be no more than another Air France daughter in a few years, and most of those are quickly either absorbed or disbanded.

I wish I were flying

if AF dismantle lame ducks (like Air Inter) it's not going to dismantle a great airline like KL !!

plus it would be an enormous mistake since the dutch could turn to BA or LH instead of gratifying a foreign airline that killed the flag-carrier

K for koningklijke (mispelled smg?) how can you imagine AF would kill an airline with a royal name Big grin

Why do we think this construction will work? We all know KLM opposed a construction of the same sort with BA, where cooperation effectively turned out to be a merger?

As a dutchman, I'm not too thrilled about the cooperation with the French; Let's not forget that AF, although it's a good airline, has had a lot of problems with strikes etcetera and therefore in my opinion, would not add to the solid image KLM has built up over the past 83 (!) years!

I'd much rather see a return to the negotiating tables with BA as a partner! Anyone with connections among the members of the board of directors?  Wink/being sarcastic

AF has an option to buy up to 20% in AZ when Italian State will sell the company.

Only difference between KLM & AZ being that KLM has a huge intercontinental network, is much bigger, has billions in cash and has a strong & succesfull alliance with a wealthy US partner....

The rumour was started by a French minister (!?) and later denied by Air France.

Who is in control with Air France ? & how is AF going to take over anything if they make only a few hundred million per year profit for the last two years and have a multi billion $ dept with the French governement ?

Strange World ....

According to the financial Telegraph, NONE of this is true.

Let Air France stay in France!!!!

KLM can handle itself.

It has just been reported on EuroNews that Air France plans to take stake in KLM. However, these are only the speculations, since (the EuroNews say) the airlines haven't confirmed any of it.

Nonetheless, this is definitely good news for KLM, who have been searching for a European partner for the years now. AF is a viable, and modern partner and I think that both involved parties would benefit from an agreement like this.
