Air India approved a multi billion US Dollar fleet upgrade as part of an expansion into the US and €uropean markets.
Severall billions of US Dollars will be spent on 37 new aircraft, financed through debt markets. 17 long haul planes seating more than 250 pax are planned. 50% of the airplanes ordered must be able to do India - USA non-stop. Air India also is planning to evaluate whether a 400+ pax aircraft is needed.
15 to 20 short haul aircraft to be used around Asia and the Middle East are planned to be purchased too. "This deal will be worth several billion dollars, and from Air India's perspective it's a major step towards our global expansion," said Jitender Bhargava, director of public affairs at Air India.
India is a fast growing market and Air India flew 3 300 000 passengers last year with 25% of revenue coming from the US and €uropean market. It is also negotiating more take off and landing slots at airports worldwide.

Newspapers report that the planned cost is US$ 2 000 000 000.
"The (acquisition) plan is based on the recommendations of a sub-committee formed to look at Air-India's requirements in terms of number of aircraft, types of aircraft and the routes to be serviced," Jitender Bhargava, director of public affairs at Air India said.

But don't forget that AI now joins IC in the holding pattern over the Indian Civil Service . . . This could yet take months, but it is a significant step forward. If IC is going for the 32X, I think it's more than likely AI will go for the 777.

What happened to their plans of getting some extra A310's and 744's??? I know this post is talking about their long term plans--but what happened to their immediate short term plans?? Will they have enough aircraft to start the proposed EWR service?? I pass by EWR every day to and from work--can't wait to see this red beast from the turnpike!!!

Eventhough I rarely meet someone as skeptical as me , specially when it comes to Air india purchasing a/c's this is actually a step ahead of previous times . The Air India board has approved the purchases . The aircrafts in question are as follows :
1. A 340- ??? ( supposedly for the 250 seat category , absolutely no clue why the A-340)
2. B-747-400 ( 400 seat category)
3. A 320/321 ( 150-200 seat category for short haul/low yield routes )
Plans as of now are to start non stop India-US routes , South American and Australian routes. Increase services to Europe. Eventhough AI has permissions to land in 90 countries , there are flights being operated only to 40 of them so the routes are bound to increase after the purchase .
AI will be looking at immediate purchases (next 6 months ) of the A 340 / B 744 for long hauls while the rest of the purchases would be spread across 5 yrs
Well all this information is from the Times of India dated 09/19 and 09/17 . You all know how accurate news papers are about aircraft types ...

I stand corrected , I forgot to add the B772 LR to my list , must be all the RAM in my head going dud . Thanks for the correction Jaysit . I do have one concern though , on one hand AI is talking about not competing with IA on their routes and then they decide to buy the A 321/B739 which in all probabilities will be used to fly DEL-DXB , BOM-DXB, DEL-AUH and similar routes which are already being handled by IA . I really don't see these a/c's flying longer distances eventhough they are fully capable of doing so.

As with most things to do with Air India, its always a pain to seperate the rumor from the fact, even within the airline, but I've been able to come up with the following summary that seems to be pretty accurate.
The approval has only been granted to proceed with the purchase of 17 long-haul aircraft so far. Of these, 9 must be able to fly India-US nonstop and the other 8 must be able to do India-Europe. There has been a subcommittee formed under the chairmanship of Capt. M.K. Hathi, Director - Operations, to examine the possibility of acquiring additional aircraft in the 150-200 seat range to serve MidEast routes from secondary markets. There is another pilot on the committee, namely Capt. Deepak Majumdar, Director - Air Safety. The same committee has also been charged with reporting back to the board after finalizing the criteria for selecting the 17 long-haul aircraft.
Based on information from various sources, I think the commonality issue will be a very important selling point here. Boeing is likely to offer a package of 777s (-200ER, -200LR and -300ER) along with a 767-200 with a 777 flight deck and common rating in the 150-200 seat category. There is also the possibility of additional 744 orders. Airbus is likely to offer a package of A340s (-500 and -600) for the longhauls, but may suffer because of a lack of common-rating option for the 150-200 seat category. The only Airbus products in that range are the A321, which has the disadvantage of being a narrowbody on Air India's highly freight-sensitive network, and the A330-200 which is about 50 seats too large.
Right now, the advantage is definitely in Boeing's court, but there is a long road ahead before any concrete moves are made. The only silver lining about this entire process is that the disinvestment charade has finally been put on the back burner, allowing AI to concentrate on planning beyond the immediate short-term by getting rid of the uncertainty.

Does this mean that they will jettison their current fleet of 747-400s? AI dont appear to be the kind of airline that would sell a fleet of planes that are on average only about 8 years old. Still, if they want to fly daily nonstops from both Delhi and Bombay to London and/or the US without doing their usual bom/del-Eu routine, 777s are a better bet than the 744s.
Interesting that Boeing are offering the 762, considering that this was the same aircraft (although in its early 80s rendition) the Tata commission favored 18 years ago. Still, the 762 would make for a great aircraft for long thin routes and for route development.

As of right now, the 744s will not be going anywhere. They will continue to operate on the BOM-LHR-JFK route ad infinitum. That route is a cash cow for AI and they need the large aircraft for that.
The current US services are 7x weekly BOM-LHR-JFK, 3x weekly BOM-LHR-ORD and a new 3x weekly BOM-CDG-EWR starting December 6. Additionally, there are codeshares with SQ on SIN-LAX, MH on KUL-LAX and OZ on ICN-SFO.

Interestingly enough, it would NOT be used in the long thin route role, but rather as a shorthaul widebody workhorse similar to what the A310 is being used today. I too agree that a handful of 762ERs with nonstop range to Europe, South Africa, Australia and Japan would be instant winners, but that isn't in the plans right now. However, knowing both Hathi and Majumdar, I have no doubt that for a change AI's management decisions are in somewhat capable hands, so they will likely consider it before the final decision is made.
