LGW Services

A LGW-BOS service will be re-introduced next summer in addition to the current daily LHR-BOS flt. It will operate Wed-Sun commencing 8May03 using callsign VS53/54. The new service will be operated by Air Atlanta using an ex-VS Classic. On Monday the a/c will be used to operate the VS51/52 LGW-TAB-GND-TAB-LGW service planned to start 5May03.

A340-600

Due to late delivery of the 2nd A340-600, the type is not planned to be introduced on LHR-NRT flts until 27Oct and LHR-HKG on 29Nov. (But it'll probably all change before then!)

Where are TAB and GND? Do you really expect everyone to be either a) a walking airport code dictionary, or b) eager enough to look the codes up immediately?

Is there anywhere on the net that has a decode of IATA three letter codes, and ICAO four letter designators for that matter?

Think TF-ATN was at MAN either yesterday or the day before operating to MCO (= Orlando for Ikarus' benefit); they appear to like "exchanging" that with ATW from time to time....and I did hear the VS 651P depart MAN a few days ago!

Ok Ikarus. Calm down.....point taken. If you haven't had a chance to look them up yet 'LGW' is London Gatwick and 'BOS' is Boston. I'll write them out properly in future.

Hi BA777. Chances are it'll be TF-ATN or TF-ATW which are already painted up and flying for VS. Other parked-up Classics could be bought back into service if the demand is there though.

Yes 'TN is operating MAN (Manchester) to MCO (Orlando) at the moment. It was based at Heathrow doing the Lagos flts but as of today these are reverting back to an A340.

These Air Atlanta planes, are they flown by Air Atlanta pilots and do they have Air Atlanta crew members? Or is it all VS, just that the plane is owned by Air Atlanta?

Will be nice to see 2 VS aircraft on the ground at BOS next spring  Wink/being sarcastic Massport better get their act together and find some more gate space!

It's a bit of a complicated arrangement but basically the flight-deck are all employed by Air Atlanta although they are all ex-Virgin. The cabin staff are all Virgins. (Hang on I'll re-phrase that....oh you know what I mean!)

VS54 2100 BOS LGW 0830

Incidentally the Lagos services are utilising both Air Atlanta 747 and VS A340 for the next few months.

The arrangement is really weird. The a/c are still owned by VS, but VS sub-lease the a/c to CC who then wet lease (a/c and f/deck, but not cabin crew) back to VS, the a/c are exactly the same as when VS had them, except that the Reg has changed. It's a mad arrangement, but I think it was done to save money in the long run, as VS are not actually having to pay the f/deck's wages etc.

VS are still providing full engineering support too, although CC have one of their own guy's based at LHR too.

Due to the late delivery of the A346's and the requirements to have all the f/deck doors replaced by April on the other a/c, the CC sub-charter on the LHR-LOS route has been extended until April 2003. Its gone back to an A340 just for a few weeks whilst everything is sorted out, the late delivery of those A346's has really screwed things up.

I read too on the company intranet that it's not true about the baby changing tables on the A346's breaking because of couples trying to make babies on them.

Good trip?  Smokin cool I was under the impression that the Air Atlanta a/c were maintained by their engineering dept? I understood the reason for the arrangement was to get the Classic's off Virgin's AOC and hence save money on keeping crews/spares/etc. Maybe CC just do the 'heavy' stuff and VS do the turnround checks?

Bit of a bummer getting back tho, 'cos the a/c had been substituted for an LHR 744 2 days before I flew back, so they still had oversales that were trying to get away, so didn't get on and had to stay overnight at the crew hotel.  Sad

Our engineers are doing full support at LHR as CC only have the one guy based there, He's there to sign the a/c off and liase with his op's dept, and do the basic stuff that only one guy on his own can do, but our engineers are doing the rest, as they are still technically our a/c.

They still have the plates in the f/deck (you know the one that states the owners etc.) with the UK reg's on them. The certificates tho have been changed to show the sub-lease to CC (I was reading them the other day - altho my Icelandic is not too hot Big grin ).
