There are safety questions surrounding Korean, particularly some recent concerns. However I am told their in flight service is very good and statistically speaking if you're happy to drive in your car to the airport, or to work every day, then you should have no concerns flying KAL.
They have many hundreds of safe departures and arrivals every week, and have had for had for several years.
It's your choice but I wouldn't be too concerned.
I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...

Regarding KE and low fares, they often are by far the lowest fare option from the West Coast of North America as well.
Korean certainly does get mixed reviews especially regarding their safety record. Although loyal to SkyTeam and all statistics aside, for the same fare I would choose a carrier with a more reputable safety record. However, for a good fare with substantial savings, I wouldn't hesitate to fly with them, albeit with a little anxiety.
I have heard quite favourable things about their inflight service.

As much as people say they want to fly a safe carrier, most peopel here drive cars. You have more of a chance of dying in a car than flying in a plane.

Should be a good trip, 747-400 from Heathrow to Seoul and the Sydney leg is one of those EQV jobs ("Equipment Varies"), MD11, 777 or 747 (not sure if they still have -200s and -300s).

I've flown the exact same route as you (though I spend an extra day in Seoul, in order to do some sight seeing), and I can only say good things about KE.
The inflight entertainment is good, and the meals are also good. I can only recommend that you try the Korean meal instead of the "western" meal.

I had a Korean meal for the first time last night, holy mother of f***. Absolutely gorgeous, if totally weird. The starter was raw strips of beef with a raw egg on top. Gorgeous soup, incredible spices and flavours. If that's what they serve on KE, you'll have a great time (and a lot of trips to the WC).
