MAS Goes Daily To Brisbane And Auckland

Good News for Brisbane and Auckland is that from the Northern Winter schedules starting October 27 Malaysia Airlines will increase from 5 to 7 weekly flights on it's KUL-BNE-AKL route with the B747-400!

I had heard that MAS hadn't been going to well and were going to pull out of AKL earlier this year. Things are obviously picking up for MAS then!

Could it be that the BNE-AKL v.v. is making some money for MAS? Anyway, MAS is also increasing its Perth services by another A330 flight, making a total of 9 weekly flights to the Western Australia's capital. Now, with the exception of Adelaide, MAS have at least daily nonstop services to all its Australian destinations.

Well, if you have 4 weekly flights to BNE and 3 to AKL you can put them together and offer daily flights.

I think MH should have got 5th freedom on BNE-AKL but not pretty sure about this ...

I think MAS is able to fill a 747 each day to BNE and AKL combined as they compete head-to-head with SIA and Cathay in offering tickets ex-Europe and they are selling well (at least in the UK anyway). I just tried to organise a trip to MEL with Malaysia Airlines for early next year and flights leaving on weekends are already getting crowded.

Well, no doubt MAS flights could do well. I just would like to mention that the problem with MAS is, that they nearly never overbook the flight since they don't like to off-load pax. There are also plenty of group allotments on most MH flights and they give the names back 30 day before departure and the flight goes open in most cases. Another thing is that space control closes lower classes when they are already fully booked and higher classes should be still available. But this should not be the case with you since for Europe-Australia vv. you have to use higher classes anyway.

And then theres also Thai MD11 Three times a week AKL-BNE-BKK

Well I hope they can fill the 744 daily otherwise they risk losing alot of money!

Might try them since I am planning on going to BNE in January.

Also QF operate a daily 744 AKL-BNE!
NZ is daily will be a 767 daily from OCT 27!

Al i can say is Thank God they are upgrading the equipment to a 744. Their A330-300s are definitely not equipped for long haul overnight flights!

744's are already used AKL has always been a 744 since March 2001 when it was a 772 before that!

It truly is a mystery for me why so many airlines compete on BNE-AKL whereas a route such as ADL-AKL doesn't have any airlines on it at all.

Given GA and MH both fly to ADL, why not AKL from ADL????

If MH want AKL daily, why not 4x a week from BNE and 3x a week from ADL??? They may be making $$$ but they'd make more if they were the only carrier on the route.

I totally agree Aussie!! It really is about time that someone started ADL-AKL!! Air NZ did it for a short time I believe in the early 90's didn't they?!

6 airlines flying BNE-AKL is rather alot considering currently SYD-AKL only has 6 which is heaps really. MEL-AKL only has 2!

It's time to upgrade the A333's cabin a little. Flat beds are needed in first class and more legroom. C class was a nightmare for me. The seat pitch is almost like AA's MRTC. And the recline was bull.... They need a better C product for the A333.

Swissgabe: MAS does indeed practise overbooking now. I was one of the lucky passenger to get upgraded to Golden Club class on my flight earlier from Kuala Lumpur to Manchester yesterday! The flight was overbooked and I was bumped up! And I believe there are several passengers who share the same luck as I am! Will write a trip report if I have the time!

Of course Airlines (also MAS) want to have a full aircraft and MAS used to overbook their flights during the high seasons only. In order to get a full load it makes sense to overbook most of the flights hoping that there will be enough no shows, cancellations etc. Of course this doesn't work all the time and you nearly never get a full flight with no off-loads.

I only noticed that except in the high season the space control kept the availability always on the max capacity and they never sold one seat more than available, this happens normally 30 days before departure when all seat allotments have been given back to the airline and when they know how many seats they have left for sale.

Of course it also depends on the country/destinations where they fly from to KUL. Here in Switzerland people use to book their holidays just a few weeks before departure and so it makes logic not to overbook since most of them will be at the gate then.

Sorry, this hasn't to do a lot of BNE-AKL flights  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Don't forget KLM codeshares with MH on KUL-BNE-AKL too.

SYD-AKL for MH is unlikely, cause the battle seems to be too intense.

MAS is still receiving tenders for the upgrading of its cabin interiors - last I heard.

I think a priority for MAS is to upgrade its 737 fleet first before embarking on its next upgrade which would be new First and Golden Club Class seats - which would then be installed fleet wide.

Why would anyone wanting to get from AKL to KUL or beyond want to go via ADL? It's bad enough having to stop in BNE, wouldn't the trip be even longer if they sent it via ADL?

It's like the old BA flights that use to go via PER to get to SIN from AKL, grief!

My wife worked for MH in Sydney for a year or so in res before she had children. All services were usually very heavily booked and Y class and often J had trouble changing flights. MH do good business to Europe from here and I guess even with the stop in BNE thaty will do well. My inlaws used MH J class this year AKL - Euorpe and took a sidetrip to Kota Kinabalu and really enjoyed it. My wife also thought that MH had very high operational standards (and she grew up in Ansett) and would only be too happy to recommend them.

Check-out the other thread started by United Airline. You can see that all, if not most, comments on MH were extremely positive. They are a good airline with a bright future if well managed.

MAS is making money on the Sydney route as I think it does generate a lot of premium traffic. The thing is, once MAS revamps its premium products, I believe MAS will be even more successful in marketing itself as a world class carrier! The only thing that I can see that MAS is lacking behind world carriers is the sub-standard of premium products and the lack of internet-booking facilities.

I think MAS is making money on the Melbourne route as well. Even seats from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur is tight and it's not even the peak season. I think it's safe to say that in general, Australia is making quite a bit of money for MAS.

Remember....
NO airlines operating the AKL-BNE and v.v. flights make money. This is why AirNZ handed over the flights to Freedom Air. Im sure Freedom Air could make money on this route, as they offer cheap fares, and budget service.

MH, TG, QF and GA all gather their profits for this route from the transit passengers carrying on from Europe and Asia etc...
