Airbus and Boeing officials has both announced that China Airlines has decided to order 12 A330-300, and 6-8 B747-400 (types unknown). The 744 apparently to be Letter of Intent (LOI).

It has been approved by the officials, which Airbus gets the order equivalent to USD$1.5 billion, while Boeing gets USD$1.2 billion.

Both Taiwan and CI spokesperson say "we have no idea" on such news.

The A330 will begin replacing current 12 A300-600R from 2004. The 744 type is unknown, but it makes sense to CI's fleet, as CI's cargo market has the need for additional 744.

With this move, CI and Taiwan avoids boycott from EU and avoid to be labelled as "unfriendly" to US with recent helps.

The news analysts says that is a wise move for CI to buy 744, since Boeing's planes is always more expensive than Airbus. Plus it would cost CI a lot of money for getting 777s.

i.e. wise not to buy ALL Boeings because of the expense I guess.

Introducing a new type of aircraft to the fleet is always expensive, CI already operate the 744, so ordering more saves the cost of training on the ground for maintaining and crew training. It also saves money from buying new equipment to service the planes. I think to get certified for ETOPS flying the 777 would be also expensive.

CI's explaination that buying 744 is cheaper because it already operates a fleet of 744.

Going with 777 will cost tons of money on support and its against it fleet rationalizaton plan.

So will these 744's be a mix of PAX and Freighter's? I would guess they will get the ER wouldn't they.

Good news for Boeing and Airbus anyway!

Is this official yet? There's nothing about this order on the China Airlines, Airbus or Boeing site.

Apparently the 744 could be either pax and cargo. Boeing has recommend CI that they should retire some old 744 pax and get new ones.

Airbus and Boeing haven't announce the order because they're waiting for final CI announcement.

CI's B 747-400s are not old. They need not be retired anytime soon. Perhaps they can be used for expansion.

Wonder why no one has mentioned that in this week's Aviation Week, it is alleged that Airbus has made special offers to CI's CEO personally. That's why Boeing went to the US government in the first place. FWIW, Airbus flatly denied the accusation.

Why can't Airbus make a special deal ?, Its better then the way the US does it, via POLITICS !!

Airlines should be allowed to have the aircraft they need, not the aircraft they are told to have.

They can, if it's not under the table. What implied in the report is there was under-the-table deal for CI officials. European governments play politics, too. Don't be so naive.

And with CI still majority-owned by the Taiwanese Government, how can politics NOT be involved in such major events.
