Can anyone tell me anything about the hijacking of a TWA 727-200 in july of 1986 and the name of captain of the plane? Can you also tell me on who to blame for the crash in Tenerife? Was it the Pan Am, pilot or was it the KLM captain or was it the fault of A.T.C and how did the two 747s collide.

Tenerife was under heavy fog and the small Los Rodeos airport was full of chaotic traffic (also because of diverted traffic from Las Palmas). Due to planes parked on taxiways the KLM 747 taxied for take off on the runway shortly followed by the PanAm 747.
The ATC told the PanAm to exit the runway on the third taxiway (C3) but the crew understod the instruction as to exit on the third intersection (wich is C4).
On the other hand the KLM pilot thought he was cleared for take off but the ATC just gave him the ATC clearance, not the take off authorization.
The KLM was on the take off roll and the PanAm was still on the runway because he didn't exit on C3, remember there was a heavy fog.
They crashed into each other and this was the worst accident in aviation history.

TWA (847?) captain was Testrake. TLC has an interesting special on airplane crashes that talked about Tenerife. The first office on KLM new they didn't have clearance but didn't speak up. He reported back to ATC and repeated clearance almost in a question tone hoping ATC would say stop!

Also, the captain of KLM was one of the highest regarded KLM pilots and was called to help investigate prior to KLM realizing he was actually the pilot.

Captain's name was John Testrake. He passed away about two years ago. I read about his passing in ALPA magazine. Incidentally, one of the hostages of TWA 847 went on to write a book about the ordeal. His name if I recall correctly is Kurt Carlson.

The 727 involved in the TW 847 incident (which occurred in June, 1985) was N64339. When I lived in the STL area I was curious about the same thing. I went to the library looking for the famous picture of Capt. Testrake being held at gunpoint in the cockpit. Sure enough, you can see "4339" painted on the nose.

The last time I saw 4339 was in 1998 at STL. It had just been repainted in the new TW colors.

I havent been to St Louis since the new year, not knowing how many of their 727's are left. Can someone please tell me about how many are left. If there are I guess they were hush kitted but I didnt think there were many if any that were fitted with this. By the way I show the hijacked 727 was an advanced model can someone verify that? And I also show that the 727 was still on the roster just before the new year.

Regards

Brian

4339 was the second advanced 727-231 TWA received. The first three "A" models were somehow different from later ones, but I don't recall how. I will have to look at Dads' training manuals
