What a mess its a he said she said. Yukon Government apparently told AC to add a flight and is now punishing them for it.

Yukon to punish Air Canada for flooding market

Whitehorse, Yukon - The Yukon government is punishing Air Canada for unfair business practices. A government air travel committee has determined Air Canada flooded the market last summer with an unreasonable number of flights. However, the airline says they're just doing what the government wanted.

Last summer was Air Canada's busiest summer schedule ever, with four flights a day going to Vancouver. The schedule began even before Air North, a Yukon-owned carrier, began its new service to Vancouver and Alberta.

Air North complained, arguing Air Canada was putting far more seats in the market than was reasonably necessary. The Yukon Government's Air Travel Committee has ruled the complaints are valid.

Infrastructure Minister Scott Kent says Air Canada will be penalized accordingly.

"What we are going to do is shift our spending pattern in the amount that of the damage that was done to Air North," he says. "So they will get their equitable share of travel, plus whatever the amount the committee determines Air Canada had this excess amount of capacity in the market."


Kent says he doesn't know exactly how much government money will be shifted to Air North, but says it has already started. He says Air Canada got no government business last week on the days Air North was flying.

That's good news for Air North President Joe Sparling.

"The evidence was pretty clear but, we're talking 10 per cent of the market and that sort of shift in number isn't going to warrant extra flights or anything," he says. "But going into winter it's sure going to make a big difference to our flights."

Sparling estimates the government spends about $250,000 a month on air travel.

However, Air Canada executives say they're puzzled by the decision.

They say Premier Pat Duncan asked for the extra summer flights when she met with Air Canada boss Robert Milton.

"We are surprised at that considering this summer we put an additional flight on at direct request of the Yukon Government," says Angela Mah. "Premier Duncan met with our CEO and a request for an overnight flight was put in at that meeting. Subsequently we made a decision to put that flight in at the request of the Yukon Government."

Mah says the extra evening flight is now off the schedule because of lower demand.

That's weird. Usually, every summer Canadian/Air Canada has three 737 flights a day between Vancouver and Whitehorse for a total of 300 seats available. This year, it was two 737s and two 146s, for a total of 352 seats. They're getting 'punished' for having 52 more seats?

No Dash8King, I'm not working for an airline right now. I just feel that Air Canada, while far from perfect, doesn't deserve a lot of the crap they get from people.

I worked for Royal/C3. Right now I need to finish university and also on my pilot's license. Hopefully one day I'll be Captain Gomes at Air Canada  Big grin

Yeah I knew that you worked for Royal/C3 and got mixed up with you and Cessnapimp I think. As you can tell from my posts I am a loyal WJ fan but I do agree that AC does get a lot of crap they don't deserve and this is one example.

I agree with Nuno. While I'm no fan of AC, it does get blamed for a lot of unnecessary crap.

When AC pulls out of a market, the locals are up in arms; when it increases service, the locals are up in arms!

In this case, the Yukon govt just wants to protect the new 732 upstart Air North. But it is a deregulated market, so AC is free to add flights as they see fit.




Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.

I never said anything on the previous thread about Air North, but I find their new livery quite nice and refreshing! I was afraid to mention it that time because everybody hated it. So go ahead, take your shots!

However, I do not know how they are doing.

Whitehorse, Yukon - An airline president and industry analyst say they they don't believe Air Canada officials when they claim Premier Pat Duncan asked the company to put on an extra flight last summer.

The extra flights were meant to kill competition from an upstart Yukon carrier, they say and Yukon should go ahead with plans for punitive measures against Air Canada.

Air Canada made the claim last Friday, after the Yukon government announced it was punishing the airline for flooding the territory's market with jets all summer long.

Officials said the extra flight was added at the request of the premier, who had met with the company president.

The explanation doesn't wash with Joe Sparling, the head of Air North.


"I don't believe for a minute that the premier would have asked them to put on a fourth flight," says Sparling.

Air Canada is not telling the truth about this summer's heavy Yukon schedule because that would be admitting guilt, he says.

"They can't say they put the extra flights on because we knew there was going to be all these extra people flying this summer, the statistics would show the opposite," he says. "The reason the extra flight was put on is pretty clear, it was to have an impact on us."

Rick Erickson, an independent air industry analyst, agrees. He says Air Canada's bullying tactics are a regular practice across Canada. This is just the first time anyone has been caught and convicted, he says.

"We've seen these tactics employed by a variety of carriers in the past," he says. "I mean the number of carriers that have gone into the big triangle, the Ottawa-Montreal-Toronto triangle, and simply flamed out because Air Canada matched them seat for seat and dollar for dollar."

Erickson says the Yukon government's dominance in the economy gives it significant leverage to ensure air competition is fair.

No other government in Canada could apply the same economic pressure as the territory in their markets, he says.

The government has not yet determined how severely it will punish Air Canada.
