Have been trying to find some information about Olympic. I know the Greek government was trying to privatize the airline, but wondered if there are any new developments?

Privatise? the airline would soon be downsized to a regional carrier to stem losses. The question is "when?". Lets hope its soon. That airline is an embarassing ambassador to Greece.

Ryanair is right, the plan of the Greek government foresees to downsize Olympic, to a "European carrier" till 2003... , but...
many Greeks, politicians, officials & tourist agencies criticize the government, so it would not be a wonder if plans would change again:

* In Melbourne, the second largest Greek city after Athens, over 1 million Greeks start to protest outside the embassy, travel agencies etc.
cause Olympic will withdraw the Athens - Bangkok - Melbourne - Sydney service, furthermore its not sure if Qantas (probably Australian Airlines) will take over at least the Melbourne route. The same thing goes for SIA & Thai,
* Tourist & travel agencies in Canada go further, the want (& expect!) that Olympic increase flight operation from Athens to Toronto - Montreal from 4x weekly to a daily flight, cause Greece is the second popular holiday destination for Canadians after France.
Air Canada has the traffic rights for Montreal-Toronto-Athens, several years now, but they don't make neither use of them, or want to sell or lease them (Air Transat is interested).
* this year, Olympic will make profit, approx. 10 million ??? (first time after 2 decades)

---

about one week ago, ROUTES 2002 took place (Athens - Venizelos)
the meanwhile announced (probably!) new routes are Tokyo-Narita,
Beijing and Shanghai,
+ there where also a few rumours about to reintroduce the Chicago service, and AA to Miami in 2003,

greetings Chris
