Does any member of this forum have information on the best time and terminal or location to spot the Jumbos traffic at IAD? With spring approaching in this area, I am planning a trip to Dulles to spot my favourites airliners - Jumbos, specially 747's!
Thanks in advance for your help.

I advise staying in the C/D terminal during the hours of 2pm-6pm. Many airlines are flying the 747 into Dulles. Saudi flies the 744, Virgin has flown the 744 recently, ANA flies the 744, BA the 742 (arrives at 6pm), United the 744 from LAX, Lufthansa the 742.

As was stated the arrivals from Europe start coming in after 2:30 pm. Departures for Europe are between 5 pm and 9:00 pm. The ANA nonstop from Japan arrives after 10:00 am....I've arrived on it, never departed so I don't know what time it leaves. Virgin flies the A340 usually. I've seen the Air France 777. United has many 777s and 767s, British still flies a 747 as does Lufthansa. Many others...Ethiopian, Sabena, Saudi....it's a jumbo love feast out at IAD.

I can tell you that Virgin Atlantic operates the 747 into IAD currently. When service first started the equipment was A340-300 but after 1-2 years they changed. I believe that the normal equipment is the 747-200 but sometimes a 747-400 fills in.

The best time is in the evening. Aside from the 747's, you'll see many other jumbos. Virgin742, Sabena A330, Swissair A330, Lufthansa 742, and many United 777's. And if go you on a Thursday or Sunday you'll get to see a Saudi 744, which is a beautiful plane.

The other posts are all quite right, only one problem is adequate viewing of the aircraft. I have tried this several times... the trouble with dulles is that the airport owns so much property it is hard to get a look at the planes coming and going. Once the a/c park one can view them to some extent. AF and ANA are easily viewed, as is VS at the B terminal. Unfortunately once airlines like BA and LH arrive at their gates, they are all but impossible to see! they are hidden in the old midfield terminal. The following 747s grace IAD with their massiveness each day: LH 742 (744 in summer), BA 742, ANA 744, VS 742 and 744.
Saudi and Korean fly the 744 several times per week.
Other favourite large ones of mine are the Swissair and Sabena 330's, the AF 777 and A340.
If you find a place to spot near runways let me know!!
