Hi eveyone

I been following Embraer plane's names and I thought why the new Embraer 170 doesn't belong either to the ERJ or EMB family ? and why it has no any new family name ?

Embraer must be trying to simplify things?

Embraer did originally call it the EMB-170...but it was droped to just Embraer 170. This is for marketing reasons and like Rj speculated to simplify the naming process.

It was a marketing move: they wanted this plane to be perceived as a "real"plane, not an RJ. (And certainly not a member of the EMB 110 or EMB 120 family.)

As a Brazilian, I feel quite proud having a company named EMBRAER (Empresa Brasileira Aeroespacial), thus its product being called "EMB-120" or "EMB-170"... But, unfortunately, I know that it doesn´t sound well in "the marketing world" to telling a passenger he or she is flying a Latin-American-made aircraft.

Maybe it may sound a little bit of the topic, but just like some products; we also find great people from "unusual places" (meaning outside the US, Europe or the "Northern Hemisphere"). One of the greatest singers ever, Mr. Furohk Bulsara was better known as Freddie Mercury, from the English band Queen! Would he be such a huge success if he sticked with his original name? Honestly speaking, I think it would be very unlikely to happen.

Sounds sad there still quite a lot of prejudice in the Western Developed World. Lots of prejudice attached! Maybe "Bombardier" does sound a bit more "cool" for the large majority of the airlines´customers.

P.S. I am not trying to be nationalistic here. I know there are quite a lot of Brazilians that would not even drive a car built here.

Cheers!

Ciro

I don't agree with you. From the very first moment before boarding that I knew I was going from LAX to FAT in a Brazilian EMB-120 United Express turboprop, I just thought I was going to fall in love with that plane. And so I did. The EMB-120 is a great plane. I love her.

JGore, mi grande amigo de Argentina!

Thanks for your observation.... I do appreciate it, but remember that you are not a regular passanger. You are an airline / airplane enthusiast, therefore, you are among the very few ones that would try flying Embraer´s without prejudices. "Regular people" would be, I think, much more keen to refuse boarding in such aircraft.

A bit of the topic again, but I think it would be great for the rest of the world to figure out that Argetina has the best beef around, too!

Cheers!

Should be able to add US Airways to that list here shortly. It is no secret that they will likely be on the property next year. However, they will probably come from GECAS first.
