A small Asian Update for Qatar Airways.

- QR will upgrade Doha (DOH) - Kuala Lumpur (KUL) - Jakarta (CGK) flights to daily service from December 1 2002.

- Manila (MNL) also to be upgraded to daily and Bangkok (BKK) will be upgraded to 9-11x weekly early next year at the most. Both those routes were operated twice weekly earlier in the year!

- QR's next East Asian destination of 2003 will likely be Hong Kong (HKG). For more details on what cities are under consideration check out the link below.

- QR will start DOH - Hyderabad (HYD) in November 22 2002 and DOH - Cochin (COK) in March 1 2002. Both will be operated 3x weekly with the A320 and A300-600R (two class Business and Economy).

- QR will remove First Class from all Non-Arab Asian destinations. From then on only Business Class and Economy will be offered.

Are they going to use the A332 for the KUL route? Qatar Airways is doing pretty well for the KUL route I guess. It's nearly impossible for people in the UK to fly with Qatar Airways to KUL, or is it because that the outbound flight from London is full?

As for Hong Kong, is it going to be a direct service or via BKK or KUL? If I am not mistaken, Qatar Airways and MAS have some sort of marketing agreement where MAS will ferry passengers from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur and then Qatar Airways will do the rest. Am I right? So are they going to inaugurate the new service to Hong Kong via KUL then?

Regards.

Hello,

- QR's next East Asian destination of 2003 will likely be Hong Kong (HKG).

Would this aim at capturing say traffic to/from LHR?

Interesting news and a great forum  Smile

OdiE,

The agreement with MAS covers most of East Asia and Australasia and is very succesfull, MAS has become an important partner for QR in the region. To HKG QR also codeshare with MAS.

The 2 A330-200's in the fleet are in 3 class "European" configuration and so will not be flying to Asia. On February next year QR will take delivery of 2 more A330-200's, I don't know if only one or both of the aircraft are 2 class. If only one is then you will see BKK or MNL get the A330 first. If both are then you will start seeing the A330-200 in KUL from March.

As for HKG I honestly don't know what the routing would be, the A300 couldn't fly DOH-HKG non-stop so if the route would be with the A300 it would probably be routed through BKK or KUL.

AF343,

That is probably what QR are aiming at, but also I would think there would be some traffic between Qatar and Hong Kong/China especially with all the Chinese investments in Qatar and vice versa. Also Qatar has a lot of Job openings which are traditionally taken by people in Europe, North America and the Sub-Continent but now more and more people are coming from East Asia. For example a few weeks a go 16,000 Thai people were recruited to fill jobs in Qatar.

I've heard that QR flights ex-KUL have been very successful and even on the flights to Europe with a stop in DOH uptill an extent for Y and a huge portion for C. QR said they will start to increase their prices and no more price wars but ex-KUL Malaysians can travel to DOH and Europe at a slightly cheaper fare than MH and for C class....

KUL-DOH-LHR-DOH-LHR(QR) RM7500
KUL-LHR-KUL(MH) RM14000

US$1=RM3.80

See the difference?

I tried to pursuade my dad to try QR and their new A332 on DOH-LHR v.v. but oh well the connection at DOH was upto 6 hrs ... and my dad decided to stick to his all time favourite, MAS. He is a very loyal Mas passenger... so am I  Smile/happy/getting dizzy but i would really love to see QR become another successful airline which it already is...

Airbus Lover,

KUL isn't timed very well to offer connections to Europe but KUL is self reliant on connections from the Gulf alone. Though there are still quite a lot of people flying between KUL and Europe and one-night stopovers are starting to become popular with Asians travelling to Europe and vice versa.

If you want to try QR you could book KUL-CGK-KUL but the A300's are nothing to look forward too.

I wanted to share the September 2002 results with everyone but though it wasn't worth a seperate thread. QR aimed for a 45% increase in passenger figures over September 2001 but exceeded that by 15%. This years results so far in passenger growth.

1Q2002 over 1Q2001 - 65% growth
Summer 2002 over Summer 2001 - 50% growth

QR aims that overall they carry 40% more passengers in 2002 over 2001 but that figure is expected to be 50-60% rather than 40% because of the unexpected success of some of QR's new routes and frequencies.

Yes indeed ex-KUL flights are not very well timed. But for economy class passengers, as long as they get good fares, they don't really care.

However, 7 hours is rather long. For those less busy business passengers, they won't mind because they have the lounge at Doha. But a good example is my dad, he doesn't mind paying the extra to go on MH with non-stop service. He said if the connection was shorter like 2-3 hours, he wouldn't mind it. So i guess those J pax to Europe ex-KUL are the lower ends...

KUL-CGK-KUL, I will check their fare for this tomorrow. So will I check EK, compare their fares and maybe in the future I will try them out. Frankly, the A300 is indeed nothing too special for me. Maybe when they fly the A332 on this route, as I have never yet been on an A332, only A333.

Airbus Lover,

The KUL flights are timed to offer quick connections to the following destinations:

- Dubai (DXB)
- Abu Dhabi (AUH)
- Bahrain (BAH)

Which is why it is remarkable that the KUL route is doing well, most other QR routes you have people from all over. For example to Colombo you have people connecting in DOH from all over Europe and the Gulf but KUL is very self-sufficient on 4 destinations in the Gulf alone. I think a lot of credit goes to the Malaysian tourism authorities and there extensive marketing, this year the number of tourists going from Qatar to Malaysia has increased by over 100% and this figure is similar for the rest of the Gulf.

If QR want to offer more connections to Europe and the Gulf then they will have to move departure from Doha from 2145 to 0100 and arrival in DOH from 0515 to either 1000 or 2100.

"Frankly, the A300 is indeed nothing too special for me. Maybe when they fly the A332 on this route, as I have never yet been on an A332, only A333."

The A300's interiors are also nothing special although the First Class is nice (not quite like the A330 but still good), Business Class seats are also good (For the A330 they are like the new CX J class) but Y class on the A300 isn't as good as MH since the seat pitch is only 32" and there are no PTV's.

Some of the A300's will be retrofitted with the new seats even though in 1999/2000 all of QR's A300's had interior upgrades. All of the passenger A300's will be phased out by 2005 and the on the last year they will only fly short and medium haul flights.

For A330 Interior Photos Click here: http://www.aviationgulf.com/forum/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=39
For the A300 click on this link: http://www.aviationgulf.com/forum/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=85

In a weeks time I will fly on QR's A330-200 and I will try to get some photos of the interiors and upload them to A.net (I am a poor photographer so they most likely won't be accepted)

Qatar Airways, I really appreciate your deep knowledge of QR and the aviation itself. I would have to agree with what you said. Maybe in the future they might want to adjust their departure times on some additional flight to lure more passengers bound for Europe.

The MH a330s do not have PTVs in Y class as well and seat pitch is only 33' It is quite comparable to QR's I guess. However, I have never been on QR and cannot give comments on their cabin service.
