Tampa,FL city officials along with Kissimee,FL city officals have been recently talking to Lakeland,FL city commissioners over the possible problems with the need of airport expansion in the coming years. Tampa Int'l is out of space and right now the only thing they can do is make new gates, not add runways. Lakeland Linder Regional has been planning a major expansion with a new business terminal as well as a new tower and radar being built. As it looks right now we could be looking at the possibility of moving Tampa Int'l operations and charter opertions out and into a new airport in Lakeland. All three cities are anxious to get something started as a new airline has expressed interest in the Cent. FL area. Right now Publix Supermarkets is planning to purchase 2.5 million acres adjacent to the airport to build their brand new corporate headquarters and hanger to house their 4 aircraft.

Not likely to occur. As it is there is excess gate space and the airport rarely if ever takes delays due to traffic. Aircraft operations were higher in the 80's then at current. Also PIE is right across the way and is good for budget and charter airlines.

Do you have any links to media sources. I tried to look up any reference and could not find any. Lakeland is so far out of the way for both Tampa and Orlando/Kissimmee that it would hurt more than help..

Do you live in Lakeland?

Ok, this is completely false. I live in Tampa and there has been no word from the media on this.

You have facts but they are drawn together false.

Yes, Tampa can not expand runways. But they have two runways capable of handling any aircraft, 747s and Concordes have flown into TPA, and 767s, 777s, L-1011s, and narrowbodies fly into TPA all the time.

They have two terminals that are not in use. They could be destroyed and rebuilt to handle some 40 combinded gates.

Lakeland IS planning an expansion, but YOU CAN NOT tell me that they are moving an uncrowded airport 10 minutes from downtown to a location some 60-75 minutes from downtown. Tampa and Lakeland aren't THAT close!

I'm not gonna get into more reasons why this is not true, but I'll be happy to supply them if requested.

It is well equipped and just across the bay. Very convenient, too, I might add.

TPA is not being replaced anytime soon. I was in Tampa last week and learned the following:

> They are expanding US Airways terminal ("F")
> Old and unused Terminal E is going to be torn down and a new one built in its place for Delta.
> Additional bridges are being built between the garages and terminals to handle extra capacity.

None of this sounds like an airport that is expected to be replaced in the next 50 years.

TPA moving? I seriously doubt it.

#1) the FAA would never go for it, nor fund it. TPA has two terminals (old EA and old BN, PA, etc) to renovate or rebuild.

#2) originating traffic in Lakeland? Not much.

#3) airspace considerations with MCO (which brings up another set of reasons altogether)

#4) you would need airline support, and that is not likely

Not to mention that in a recent FF survey TPA was rated 7th best airport in the world.
Have you been there?
It is a terrific airport.
