Does anyone have any information on what routes Alitalia will employ their new 777s? And will they be replacing the MD-11 on the route to ORD? I just wanted to see whats going to happen with those MD-11s and how long will they stay..

JFK-FCO is the first route, and MXP-NRT shortly thereafter. The 777's will also probably operate to EZE, MIA, and other high-density routes for AZ.

The winter 2002 Alitalia sched to the US is:
Boston-Milan: daily 767
JFK-Milan: daily MD-11
JFK-Rome: daily 777-200
Miami-Milan: daily MD-11
Newark-Milan: daily 767
Newark-Rome: daily 767
O'Hare-Milan: daily 767
As ContinentalEWR stated, JFK sees the 777s first. Than NRT and EZE will. The next likely candiate is, IMO, MIA, since it is a very dense route year-round and also has good premium traffic (fashion industry). Also likely, IMO, are GRU or KIX.

But MIA is a good cargo route too. I don't think they want to give up the extra cargo capacity of the MD11 on that route...

Hello,
I think Alitalia should seriously think to convert at least its 5 MD11 Combis into freighter for its Cargo division.
And, as far as cargo capacity is concerned, they should go for the A330-200, which will allow them to fly to distant destinations without restrictions and keeping an eye on cargo business as well.
Anyway, considering that the MD-11s are all owned and not leased, they should be too quick in getting rid of them but keep on using them until all the B777s (maybe including the 777-300ERs) are delivered.

I'm with Steman, the Md11 (at least the combi) will be converted to Freighter and will stay as AZ Cargo. If I'm right today AZ Cargo owns only 1 or 2 B742F, the other flights are operated with leased Atlas Air planes.
For the other long-haul I foresee the A332, more cargo and no payload restriction compared to the 767.

Alitalia will start service with their 777s on the FCO-JFK route starting 15Nov02. Next route will be FCO-NRT starting 17 or 20 Dec02, then MXP-NRT starting in January03. 777s will be used to EZE starting in Mar or Apr from both FCO and MXP. Take Care The777Man
Need a Boeing 777 Firing Order....Further to fly....GA, T5, CI and LX 777s

I don't think Alitalia will go for the A332. The 767-300 seems to have suited them just fine. They'll probably get some more and standardize the longhaul fleet around the 777 and 767 whereas the short- and medium-haul fleet will be primarily Airbus A320 family oriented, with the A321/A320/A319 dominating the scene. AZ also has a huge MD80 fleet. These aircraft were acquired from the mid-1980's onward and are not that old, but eventually, I see these jets being replaced with the A320 family.
The MD11's will either be converted to Alitalia Cargo operations or sold off. AZ leases some 747-400 cargo from Atlas as well.

wow I really hope MIA gets another 777. I've only seen AA (obviously), BA, UA and NG 777s (some only in pictures on a.net). Does NG and UA operate them regularly to MIA? Oh and I guess LY uses their 777s in the winter? to MIA....I really hope to see those pretty Alitalia birds....love that simple scheme...
