Hi all. Just a thought, but can we all make more of an effort to spell out airport names instead of using the three letter codes (or, god forbid, the 4 letter ICAO abbreviations, which bear no resemblence to the airport name they stand for)?

There is a very interesting thread on the go about small airports getting big jets, so the destinations mentioned are unknown to most of us by definition. If you're not from Alaska, a contribution such as "KTN, PSG, WRG, SIT, JNU, YAK, CDV, ADQ, BET, DUT, DLG, OME, OTZ, SCC all are small...airports w/ regular jet service" is just ridiculous. I think I'm very knowledgable but I learn new stuff here every day. But not from the likes of "So, KTN, PSG, WRG, SIT, JNU, YAK, CDV, ADQ, BET, DUT, DLG, OME, OTZ, SCC..."

Cheers.

PS. The following abbreviations are allowed: LHR. LAX. CDG. JFK. SYD. DFW. MIA. That is all.

PPS. OK OK, you can have ATL, FRA and MEL as well. That is all.

Ok, I would agree that smaller regional airports should be written out, but major ones? No. It makes typing a lot easier for lazy people like me, in YVR.

You're right, I was kind of kidding about the (v short) list of acceptable abbreviations. We all know the likes of KHI, DPS, BIL, GIG - but little fields in Alaska, Africa, Argentina et al are beyond even the most dedicated aviation buff.

Not worth it's own thread but did you guys know that even though Idlewild became John F Kennedy on Christmas Eve 1963, the code didn't change from IDL straight to JFK. Unfortunately the Vietnamese bloodbath was just cranking up so a few years later it was finally decided that KIA wasn't very nice. KIA became JFK sometime in the late 60s.

And finally...what's the best code in the world according to the 14 year old boy in all of us? Oh yeah, well FUK you too.

Ok, while I personally think everyone ought to know every airport in Alaska (after all, I do  Wink/being sarcastic ), I'll admit that may not be the case. And to make amends, and for those of you who haven't spent 17 years dealing with these codes, here's the translation: KTN-Ketchikan, PSG-Petersburg, WRG-Wrangell, SIT-Sitka, JNU-Juneau, YAK-Yakutat, CDV-Cordova, ADQ-Kodiak, BET-Bethell, DUT-Dutch Harbor, DLG-Dillingham, OME-Nome, OTZ-Kotzebue, SCC-Prudhoe Bay/Deadhorse.

And by the way Cedarjet, it's not beyond the most 'dedicated aviation buff', just those that don't work for the airline (AS oops, I mean Alaska) or didn't start their career in Alaska. But your point is taken and I'll behave....  Smile

As we all have internet access finding the code is easy. Find the site and bookmark it. I will type this once and only once.

LBM is Lubumbasha, ORL is Orlando Executive (easy), and OPF is Opa Locka.

I could go on but why? I learned, so can you.

Sorry, I'm being crabby tonight. A rare tropical disease has set in the past few days called lackanookie.

Damn, this website is getting worse daily.
