Continental has flown the 757-200's to Newark from San Diego before, when they didn't have as many transcon capable 737-700/800 aircraft. My guess is that the few -300's they now have will operate higher density routes this winter including Caribbean, Florida, and primary transcon markets, like to LAX and SFO as well as LAS.

Looks like only two of Continental's daily flights out of SAN will be flown with 752s this winter, and those are morning flights. I wouldn't expect to see the introduction of 753s any time soon while CO continues to fly 738s on most of the routes.
Same goes for Northwest. Most of their SAN flights are on A320s. 752s are brought in only seasonly, so I wouldn't expect to see the flights upgraded to 753s.
