The SPACEBED itself looks very impressive.
However, the carpet is a bit dull.
In a Raffles Class cabin, First Class headsheet dangly cloth things have been used which is quite illogical.
I'd have liked the purple to be more purple.
Shame there isn't a side-on view though.

At the H1 FY0203 financial results conference for analysts, the announced date for completed by July 2003.
This means it would take about 1 year and 2 months to install it on all 40+ aircraft (Boeing 747-400s and Boeing 777-200ERs)

I agree with Singapore_Air - something looks fishy with the colours - they definitely are ntohing like what the publicity photos showed (though we know how reliable they always are). I know some members have had a chance to see these seats for themselves - do they look like the photos show, or are the colour settings in the photos a bit off?

Comparing the Space Bed to the new Business class product of Cathay Pacific, in terms of visual appeal... CX wins so far. This is the first I have seen of the Spacebed and its not overwhelmingly as impressive as Cathays new seat. Having heard a few negative remarks as far as leg room and space to enter and leave ones seat in mid flight is a turn off. Its a shame the colours could not be as amazing as their first class cabin! It will be interesting to hear more personal views of passengers who took a ride on in the space bed.

I personally think the seats look great. Who gives a stuff what it looks like in the ads and promotional stuff, this is what counts, and I think they're done it pretty well. Too much purple would have been an attack on the senses, but hey, that's my opinion anyway.
Will be taking a ride in one of these on 2 Jan next year on the MEL-SIN sector, on the upper deck of the B747-400, and will definitely be posting a trip report and some pictures as well.

Andrew, enjoy the flight but be aware of the meal tray on these seats, it is the flimsiest I have ever come across. The drinks and food stains all over the carpet are testimony to this. The seats are also not as wide as the Ultimo Plus ones requiring a little more manoeuvring to get in. They continue to be plagued by problems with the electrical seat controls but there is a manual override.

The purple color is very pale in the pictures above, nothing like the ad pictures. Makes it looks impressive, IMHO, Ultimo's color is way better! Also the headrest covers are the First class ones aren't they? Why is that so?

The colours of the seats in the pictures are correct. Natural sunlight produced natural colours, those in the brochure were done under photographic lights and enhanced to produce unnatural colouring.

First Class headrest covers and pillows on the Spacebed (JCL)....
I would assume this picture was taken on a SIN-KUL shuttle flight, as it's only on these flights that they sell JCL as PCL (First Class) on the 2 class config 772ER.
The original headrest cover for the spacebeds are cream in color.
Overall, I think the colors are very soothing to the eyes... personally, I think SQ's spacebed looks classy (those bent on starting an SQ/CX war at every opportunity, please note, it's just my opinion).
It gets a little lonely when you're way up there...

Ejazz: It's interesting you say that it's harder to get into SPACEBED, as if my memory serves me correctly, the SPACEBED is 21 inches wide with the armrests up (which is the relevant factor here) and 27" wide with the armrests recessed. This is certainly more than the 20.5" width of an Ultimo seat.
Also, in the pictures, the cushioning is also red and is from First Class. Maybe SIA haven't got enough Raffles Class coverings and cushions.

The LCD screens certainly look great, and I'm interested to know how they will be mounted for the seats in Row 17 on the upper deck, seeing that the bulkhead seats in that section of the cabin have their screens mounted on the bulkhead itself, instead of a swivel arm.
Seeing the distance between Rows 14 and 17 due to the emergency exit, would I be correct to assume that Row 17 will have the screens mounted on swivel arms?

This photo shows the Spacebed even worse than my impression of it.... The coloring seems awful to me, it looks like a cheap economy seat, only that it's much bigger....... I think they should really considering changing the design..... (Not to start a war, but.....) Compare it with similar products, like CX's new biz seat, BA's Club world, etc...... CX's is much classier, and BA's not too bad either.......
But of course, any seat that can be fully flat is great...... Only that SQ's spacebed's coloring looks horrible......

Andrew,
The PTV's on row 17 are placed on the center console which extends a further 2 feet or so from the front of the seat, and swivels outwards from the arm. The arm design looks almost identical to MH's PTV arms. Row 11 (first row of upper deck) has them mounted on the wall.
Singapore_air,
On the upper deck of the 744's, Only the aisle seats are 27 inches wide when the armrests are lowered. Window seats cannot have the window aisle lowered, so only 1 side goes down. The aisle seat has the option of lowering or raising the aisle armrest, but the armrest nearer the center of the seat pair goes down and stays down when the seat is reclined fully. I don't quite know how it works on the lower deck especially with the center seat, nor do I know how it works on 777's

Thanks for the insight, Ejazz and Shortfinals. I was curious about the LCD's for row 17 because I will be flying in 17A on the MEL-SIN sector. Hopefully I'll be able to get some good shots of the wing and engines from there!

Is SQ going to have 2-2-2 seating arrangemnet in both the 777 and 747? CX has 2-3-2 seating in the 747 (which is more or less the same width as the 777), so does this mean SQ's seat is wider?

It looks awfully cramped. Hardly any room between the rows of seats! Are the person's feet supposed to slip into that little cubby-hole under the seat directly in front? Wouldn't they be a little trapped?
BA's F class sleeper seats are much nicer, I think. They have wood tables that flip down, wood trim...very classy.

Good luck getting a shot of the wing and engines from the upper deck! The best you will get is the number one engine and the distance to the wingtip, Maybe a bit of engine 2 in there as well if you manage not to get the window frame in the shot! The upper deck is the worst place to view or photograph the wing besides first class which you cant even see it! If you want good wing shots my advice is go for the L2/R2 exit row or the two rows or so behind it! I found thats the best place for a view of the wing!
26 Ex_SQer: Compared to the photos on the SIA website, it looks a bit "anemic" in natural light (but heck, so do the Singapore Girls ). It is a nice departure fro
27 Shortfinals: Hkg_Clk, SQ's layout is 2-3-2 on the lower deck of the 744. Andrew, 17A is the seat I had from SIN-SYD last week. I think it's the best C class seat i
