SriLankan Eyes China, Resume Italy In 2003

SriLankan Airlines has expressed its interest to start flights to Mainland China and resume flights to Italy in mid-2003.

The airline recently received 1 additional A320 for increasing flights to India, and effective December 4, resumption of Frankfurt service.

The Frankfurt services were long overdue. Good to see that they finally acted, The idea of a China route is strange. Its true that there is increrasing Foreign Direct Investment into Sri Lanka from China and some Chinese companies are making visits there, but I am not sure if there is enough demand to warrant flights to China.

I assume that the flights to China, will go via some place like Bangkok. My money is on Shanghai being the city they serve. It will be interesting to see how they go about it. By the way, where did you get this info from?

Interesting that more airlines are expanding into mainland China, last few weeks Garuda Indonesia and Korean Air also added Shanghai, as did Emirates cargo in September, according to a member here PIA may also revive Shanghai, the route was axed in the 70's.

Since UL won´t resume their Colombo - Dubai - Stockholm flight - any chances for a EK service DXB - ARN?
Does someone with inside info of UL know what the loads were on ARN - DXB compared to ARN - Colombo?

I don't think that UL would start services into China mainland before end of next year. It has been pointed out a few time that UL should concentrate on money making routes and not just to expand. UL does make profit and opening new routes could affect that point too much.
I wonder if flights to FRA would make money for the airline it self and if there could be a profit on FRA flights. No doubt Sri Lanka as destination will profit of that fact.

I read a few months ago that Srilankan has started operating a coach service for people traveling from Antwerp/Brussels direct to CDG Terminal 1. (using a Srilankan branded coach). Apparently this is offered at the time of booking. So my guess is that they are targeting passengers from Belgium and Holland for the CDG ones.

On the FRA ones I have noticed a long check -in queue at Colombo Airport last time I was flying out of there. A lot of German tourists are coming to Srilanka and the Maldives. Lauda and LTU fly into CMB on a regular basis now. So with the good inflight service on offer on UL I am sure they will pick up a full load each time. I will find out from an employee what the load factors are on the FRA ones.

incidentally they have started to offer Video Games (up to 16) from 1st October. Looking forward to checking it out when I fly in December Big grin

You are right about the Coach services to BRU. UL also just appointed a GSA in Belgium and Netherlands. Good way. Another possibility would have been train connections if there would be direct trains to CDG.

My concern regarding FRA doesn't have to do a lot with loads. It's more about Yield. No doubt FRA could fill the plane with German tourists or transit pax from Eastern Europe. I wonder which prices the pax are going to pay and what UL will get as Yield.
Just to mention that there is not only Lauda and LTU in CMB. Also Swiss charter Edelweiss will start services to CMB (Nonstop) and other European charters such as Travel Services out of BUD, CSA from PRG etc

The games are really cool! I like them and anyway, the PTV with touch-screen are cool and one of the bests I have seen in Y until now.

Hmm... I can't see UL flying to China soon. They have been very conservative in expanding their routes lately and I think in current climate Europe and India would be their main focus.

With regard to China, may be due to stiff competition in CMB-BKK-HKG route (UL/CX/TG) I think UL can have a product differentiation by flying to another city in China eg. Shanghai as most here have pointed out. But still it would be prudent to try direct CMB-HKG before trying another city in China.

Fully agree to what Airlanka said regarding UL's conservative expanding policy. Just to add that I think, that UL is very happy with HKG and also the traffic between HKG and BKK has to do quite well.
