I think Alaska's YYC-LAX route has only been in operation a few days now, so they'll probably want to see how that makes out first. I'm sure Alaska gets a good feed into SEA on Horizon's YEG-SEA run.
As an aside, with AC cancelling the YEG-LAX route apparently in January, won't that leave Edmonton with no transborder routes from Air Canada.(!!!) Or am I mistaken? I think that is pretty pathetic. I can see why the mayor et al would be a little upset. It is the 5th or 6th biggest city in Canada. To think that YEG once had flights to Chicago, Denver, LAX, and SFO(seasonal I think?).....now left with nothing from the national carrier. Just MSP on NW and DEN on UAX!

I think a lot will depend on whether the US intends to keep its PFI facility at YEG active. With the recent drop in transborder operations from YEG, there are only services to MSP, DEN and SEA left - all of which can very easily be cleared on the other side of the border for optimal resource allocation since those three facilities are currently operating under capacity. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of LAX, and a YEG-LAX without PFI in YEG would probably not be succesful when YEG-YYC-LAX with PFI in YYC exists as an option.

I don't think the PFI is at YEG is in any danger at this moment. The airlines like preclearance - especially the US carriers - because it allows much quicker, easier, all around better connections at the US hubs - plus it allows airlines to offer same-plane service to other destinations. There's still enough activity on the MSP, SEA and DEN runs to preclearance going, at least for the time being.
The sad part about all this is that I don't think it really matters how the YEG originating routes do. With Alaska's new YYC-LAX route, I'd suggest that AC probably took a bit of a hit on YYC-LAX. It couldn't exactly cut back on YYC-LAX, so it would cut YEG-LAX to fill the passenger deficit out of YYC. Can't say it definitively, but seems to me likely given that at least anecdotally the loads on YEG-LAX were higher than YYC-LAX (although yields probably not as good).
Oh, and finally on the possibility of AS flying to YEG. I don't see why not, but wouldn't hold my breath - the issue of airline service into Edmonton has been an issue as long as I can remember, and that doesn't appear to be about to change. And the mayors and airport officials have always had the same hot air filled commentary that requires some skepticism.

It is just ne more thing that Air Canada does to ignore Edmonton. The absolutely don't care about Edmonton." Air Canada spokesman Laura Cooke said the route was not profitable enough. Passengers booked after January 6th on the flight will be offered connecting services via Calgary, or Vancouver. Both Delta and Alaska are looking into serving the route in wake of Air Canada's decision to withdraw.
My thoughts on this is with a 76% load factor I AC is making money on the route as its breaking even. I do argree with the Mayor of Edmonton that AC doesn't care about Edmonton let alone other Major Canadian Cities like Winnipeg and Halifax. All AC cares about is building a massive hub out of YYZ. I think AC should wake up and stop going after westjet and pump some flights into the westren USA. SO EVERYONE IS HAPPY!!!!! The city of Edmonton isn't happy right now with AC even though when the new terminal got built in YEG AC got to go in there and youd think out of respect the least AC could do is add a few flights to the US since Edmonton is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, but nope they are dropping flights. Heck Westjet should be in the new terminal and AC should move back to the old one. At least Westjet adds flights out of Edmonton!!!! AC WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!
those are my thoughts on this.
I sure as hell hope That eathier Alaska or Delta does the route and I know that they would make a profit on it.

I'm sorry, maybe I missed something...but where is it written that an airline is obligated to continue nonstop service to destinations that are only marginally profitable for them? If I'm AC, and I see that I can redeploy that plane elsewhere and make more money, then I have to do this. Why? Because of my obligation to my employees and shareholders. If a mayor happens to get all butt-hurt and take it personally, then so be it. But AC is a business, and they can't make financial decisions based on popularity or what some may perceive as "not caring" about a particular city.
