Kiwi travellers are about to step aboard one of Air New Zealand's ten new-look Express Class aircraft that are launched on November 1, 2002 and one of the first things they will notice is the streamlined single-class interior.
As a new era in domestic aviation begins, the new Express Class concept sees the disappearance of Business Class and the start of a low fare, one-class service.
Reconfiguring the Air New Zealand domestic fleet interiors into a single class has been a mammoth undertaking for the airline's Christchurch engineering base.
A team of 41 design and engineers have reconfigured the ten aircraft over the past two weeks - with each only being out of service for 32 hours. More than 5,000 man hours have been spent on the redesign and engineering project for Express Class.
The tight turnaround involved stripping out the existing eight Business Class seats, installing 14 new Express Class seats and laying new cabin carpet in the forward section of the aircraft.
The are now 23 seat rows onboard, up from the former 21 rows, and seat pitch has been marginally decreased from the standard 32" on the old domestic craft to between 30" and 32" with Express Class.

FYI, the last Air New Zealand National domestic service will be flown by ZK-NGM as NZ559, departing Auckland at 2100 tonight (31 October) and arriving in Christchurch at 2220.
The first Air New Zealand Express service will be operated by 767-200 ZK-NBA as NZ501, departing Auckland at 0650 tomorrow (01 November) and arriving in Christchurch at 0810.

Will Air New Zealand be applying 'Express' titles to the outside of these aircraft or will they remain the same?
Also, got a sneak peek on Wednesday of the new seating layout on ZK-NGK. Certainly looks different without the J class seating, just like a big bus!

TG992: Is the 762 being converted to J class only????????? Quite frankly I won't really miss the meals in ANZ. They were nice but the since the flights are relatively short it doesn't really matter that much differnace.

Heres a question for anyone that's used the self check-in system, can you pick the seat you want, or do you have to take what the machine spits out at you?

sorry I saw I asked the wrong question (it was one of those days) after I posted it. What I meant to ask was are the ATRs, Saabs and Beechs getting the same type of seat as the domestic 733s and NBA
