A Post from airwise...

Air France is offering 3 GE90-powered B777-200ERs to Skyteam Alliance partner AeroMexico.

AM's CEO is very interested with the offer, and the decision is due in 12 months.

AeroMexico should take Air France up on this offer. They need more modern aircraft in there fleet, there current fleet of long haul aircraft include the Boeing 767-200ER and the Boeing 767-300ER, which are ageing. The 777-200ER will be a welcome addition into there fleet, plus the benefits of more routes, introducing the longer range capabilities of the 777-200ER.

Yes. It would be very good for AeroMexico to get those planes. There is a huge demand on the European routes that the airline serves with daily 767 service wich is simply not inuff.
The decision is due in 12 months because AM is waiting to incorpore its new fleet of 73Gs (wich will begin to arrive by september 2003).
By then, if their financial status allowes them, they would get those 777s.

I do have to say that Air France is doing a very good offer to AeroMexico so I wouldn´t be surprised if they accept them sooner!

Air France is offering the planes because they have them on the ground. Currently, they don´t need them. My guess would be over capacity as well.

In addition, I´d like to comment that AeroMexico´s long-haul fleet is not really that old. The 767s were adquired in the early '90s, right after the retirement of the DC-10s. The newest 763 was delivered in late '98.
After the 73G incorporation in '03, the fleet will have an average age of 7 years.

Seems to me AF doesn't have ENOUGH planes in its fleet. But this is a decision to be made within the next 12 months, a lot can happen in that time.

Hope AM take this offer before the 12 months period!  Big thumbs up

OR

What about the lease of some MD11s from DELTA Sky Team partner?? Another possible choice... more capacity and less weight restrictions at MEX airport....

Before 11th Sept. AeroMexico was planning to start a service to Italy (MXP or FCO) in code-sharing with AZ.
If they take these B772s there is a chance they will start to fly to Italy??
When they were interested in flying to Italy they had only B762/763 that aren't the perfect plane for a so long flight (I think a B763 from MEX to Italy has some restrictions in payload).

Have they thought about flying to LGW?

Apparently, they wanna start flying into London. AeroMexico has long awaited to purchase some slots at LHR. If I was the CEO I would have thought about LGW as well. But I guess they want Heathrow or nothing.
In my opinion its quite dumb because LGW is really almost the same and the Mexico City-London market is truly huge but sadly underserved.
Most of the people must make a connection in the US in order to go to the UK because the direct BA MEX-LHR flight is ALWAYS full. And I speak for my personal experience and MANY of the people I know.

While nothing has been officially confirmed, among the many reasons that AF supposedly wants to unload certain aircraft is the desire to standardize the engine choice of their 772ERs to the GE90-94B. No doubt any aircraft they sell/lease to AM will be powered by the GE90-92B, while -94B versions remain with AF.

As a big fan of GE90 powered 777s, I'd love to see this. I also think AM is a PRIME candidate for the 772LR... the aircraft par excellence to operate a nonstop in the surprisingly lucrative MEX-TYO market. Get to it Boeing marketing!!!

I wonder if AF would give them some of their slots to start LHR service?
With the strong UK-Mexico links I'm sure Aeromexico would do rather well on the route with a 762 to start with.

Actually if its one thing AF does not have is a surplus of B777's. It is quite often than AF has to put other A/C on routes served by 777's because they're simply arent enough of them in the fleet. I think the idea behind the sale has to do more with AF's ambition to acquire larger A/C (A380) on the routes served by the B777 ex LAX JFK.

AirFranceJFK:

My comment was according to what Javomd88 (an actual AM MD80 pilot) said. He said exactly what I posted here. If this is true or not, well that´s something else then.
If you wish to read it then visit the discussion where it was posted: "Aeromexico pilots sign B737-700 contract!".
Sorry for the "inconvenience".
