ok this is for people with excellent South Florida transportation knowledge...this may no pertain to airplanes but it has to do with MIA and it is really troubling me!

Around MIA there are several railroad tracks...for example...on the west end of 9R/27L there are two tracks (also one or two that extend all the way down that south runway however they look abondoned and I've never seen a train on them)...the tracks swoop around near the Palmetto Expressway (826) and then to a yard north of the airport...my question has to do with this picture:

What in the world is FEC (Florida East Coast Railway) doing pulling passenger coaches (look in the background)!!!! There are no major maintnence (train) facilities south of the airport and I doubt there is any passenger service either...only freight trains operate to homestead on the ex-Seaboard line...this really perplexes me so if anyone knows, please share!!!!

I know this really isn't aviation realted so to do so.....was there any ever train service to MIA??? (stupid question but this topic needs some realtionship to aviation)...probably in the last 10 years b/c the jet is a 744...

Thanks!

No expert, but I'm guessing those are former passenger cars now used by track-maintenance crews.

Don't know about before I worked at MIA (starting in 1977) but my dad used to tell me when he was working on the ramp in Line Maintenance (starting back in 1946) that the train tracks actually when through the airport and even across the runway! He mentioned one incident where a crew was landing a Lockheed Lodestar (tail dragger) at night and was about land when they spotted a train parked across the runway. They bounced the aircraft over the train and made the landing.

I dont know the answer to your question but I have a MIA Perimeter Question of my own. What's the viewing areas like today? Is the south side along the freeway still barricaded? have people found ways to stop and pull over anyway? Or have they relaxed it a bit? How about runway 12 over by customs, can you still park in one of those cargo areas parking spaces and walk up to the fence w/the "photo" holes?

I'm curious because i really would like to visit again if there was a decent chance to do spotting and photography. I lived there in the 90's and enjoyed coming down to MIA every few weeks for close-up action!!

It's hard to tell from the picture, but the passenger coaches look something like those on the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey circus train.

I just moved down to MIA area. I have already had my share of run-ins with the law at the airport. Yes the photo holes at 12 are still there and yes you can go to them, but do not park in the partking lot just to the west of them... Or else a Customs officer will come and give you a really, really big hassle. You have to park across the street (Sorry I forgot the Street name) and walk over. With respect to 9R/ 27L, really the only good place to park is at the 94th Squadron restaurant. All along the Perimetre Rd. there are the barricades and signs that say no stopping or standing. And for me, I don't want to mess with the hassle of cops anymore than I have to. I went over to the Restaurant parking lot the other day during my lunch break. As I said I justmoved here so I am still trying to find the good places at KMIA/KFLL (I know about the main viewing area here), any other suggestions as to places to view, without the law breathing down your neck.

I was there in April , and spent alot of time over by Eldorado Furniture and didn't see a cop the whole time. You cannot park a little farther down the road or at the parking areas along Perimiter Road. I didn't get over to r/w 12 spots.
Also,FLL's photo holes are gone, but the area was still open. Aren't they going to make a new r/w and close that spot ? It's a shame. It's one of the best spots I've seen.

Eldorado Furniture is right next to the RR tracks by r/w 9R. I don't know the name of the road , but it's right off the x-way near the Radisson Mart hotel. There is also an airplane shop almost next to Eldorado. (AirTransport Press). They have tons of books and stickers and the like.
I'm planning on going down there in Jan after I get my Sony F707.

Aside from the 94th Aero Squadron, there's one off-road parking area on Perimeter Road just a bit west of the restarant (right around the touchdown zone for 9) that hasn't been blocked off and typically gets several cars each night (parents bringing their kids by, etc.) I've seen the cops drive by more than once on the three times I've been there without issue.

I'll be a fulltime resident of the area 12/1, so I'd love to get together as well.

Regarding the identity of the rail cars, I posted a link to the picture on a rail forum (www.nycsubway.org), and it appears that the cars are old passenger cars converted to maintenance-of-way equipment. The main clue is the large side door on the car on the left of the picture, a likely add-on at the time of conversion. They aren't from the circus train, as I had thought, as they lack the distinctive RBB&B red logo.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but the passenger coaches look something like those on the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey circus train...wow that is a very good guess...the old lines used to head into the city next to the Miami Arena and that would make perfect sense however thank you for the correct information..

I was spotting a few weeks ago at MIA (yes through the holes)...my dad dropped me off and some county official came over and removed me from that area (off of 9R)...pissed me off but oh well..

Again thanks for the great info...
