The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will get an early holiday present Dec. 11 with its first scheduled service to South America.
Alianza Summa, an alliance of Colombian carriers Aces, Avianca, and Sam, will fly one flight daily from Bogotá to Fort Lauderdale and back to Bogotá.
Juan Arbelaez, North America and Mexico director for Alianza, cited population demographics and other market studies in explaining the need for the service.
''Approximately 90,000 Colombians live in Broward County. And 22 percent of travelers who fly to Miami from Colombia head toward North Miami-Dade County, Broward and points north. We are also closer to major carriers like JetBlue and Spirit Airlines,'' he said.
''This is our chance to shine for millions of people from Colombia,'' said Nicki Grossman, Broward's head of tourism.
``It is a giant step forward for Broward County.''
Alianza Summa will operate its new route using Airbus A-320 aircraft with only 144 seats. Twelve seats will be available for business class, 132 will be economy.
The airline plans expanded flights by Spring 2003.

so wont this compete with AA's MIA-BOG with (757/737)?
AA's MIA-BOG is one A300, one 767-300ER, and one 757-200. And yes, it will compete with them, along with Avianca/Aces thrice daily MIA-BOG (763 and 2x 752) and LanChile's 3x a week MIA-BOG (763). Aces plans to launch FLL-MDE and a second-daily FLL-BOG by summer if everything works out well.

Im sure they will do great on this route, with the large number of Colombians in South Florida and with the big number of Colombians traveling between Colombia and South Florida -they have the formula for a successful route. A route that Im waiting to see is SDQ-FLL (Right now I can see Spirit in the future adding this route- they have mentioned they want to operate more flights to Latin America and maybe AA)

IMO, yes, this is the start of many Latin American routes from Ft. Lauderdale. I can definitley imagine the following becoming reality from Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood:
Cancun
Caracas
Lima$
Medellin*
Mexico City
Panama City
San Jose
San Salvador
Santiago, Dominican Rep.
Santo Domingo
$-Aero Continente has the authority to fly to FLL, but has not made any of it yet.
*-As I mentioned earlier, Aces is already planning Ft. Lauderdale-Medellin services.

This flight may compete with a lot of the AA flights however FLL is just great...easy and quick (well maybe not now with the construction) ...they do lack food services though (at least in terminal B and A..) however I think it definitely tops MIA's services...I really do hope FLL becomes truly international!
