Several years ago, a family friend of mine was supposed to have boarded a Canadian Regional flight from YXD(Edmonton Muni) to Grande Prairie, AB. (Note: this was before YXD was closed to all scheduled airline service except for planes less than 19 seats) But the gate agent just glanced at his boarding pass, and on he went. After the plane pulled back from the gate and was about to take off, he realized he was on the wrong plane when he heard the FA asking for someone by his name - and that the crew was making the usual announcements about the flight to YVR!!
Fortunately, Canadian Airlines was kind enough to give him a voucher for an overnight stay at a hotel in Vancouver and a flight to Grande Prairie at no extra cost. I almost did get on a wrong flight once, when I was to board a Dash 8 to Grande Prairie, but a ramp worker stopped me and an elderly woman from going any further after he was alerted by gate agents that they themselves screwed up! Had it not happened, I would've ended up on a flight to High Level, AB - a small northern town about 600 km(373 miles) north of Grande Prairie!

Has this kind of situation happened to anyone or anyone they know? I'd love to hear some accounts about them and how you got back!

My dad did the same thing in South Africa. He went out of the gate (onto the tarmac) and there where 2 planes well he got on the wrong and flew for about 3 hours in the opposite direction then he had hoped he arrived about a day late but it makes a great story.

I read something like this in Airliners once about a Midway flight. It was either Jan./Feb 2000 or March/April, 2000. Its on the last page.

Remember the case a few years ago when a guy flew to Aukland, NZ instead of Oakland, CA from LAX?

I think Air New Zealand flew him back.

Those of us in the forum know something would be wrong when you step on a 744 for an hour hop to the Bay Area!

I wonder if this is the story DeltAirlines was talking about (I didn't see the article), but a few years ago, a young woman was boarding a flight at Shannon. She was supposed to have been going to either Manchester or London with MANX, but oddly enough the two flights were boarding at the same time. When the Belarus Airlines flight to Minsk was boarding, she thought it was hers; obviously difficult to tell the difference between a Jetstream and a Tu134 and then of course, there's a slight difference in accents when the "welcome on board" is given. And of course, a slight distance difference. Anyway, she got to Minsk and was invited to stay overnight, courtesy of the local police.

Lufthansa took pity and flew her to London next day.

She won't make that mistake again.
But, then again . . .

I've come close. I was running through MSP once to make a tight connection becuase the flight I was arriving on was late, (45 min). And there was a gate change. The only thing was is that it was announced before my plane got in. So I didn't here it. I went to the gate and the gate agent told me of the gate change and kindly pointed me in the right direction.

I also remember a Full House episode where Steph and Michelle got on a plane bound for Auckland instead of Oakland like they were supposed to.
(Not that I watch that show or anything!)

I was also making a connection at MSP back to YWG. We arrived on the green concourse and our gate was in the gold concourse. Anyways we got to the gate and on the plane with all the other Winnipegers when there was a announcement that that flight was going to GFK. I got ofgf the plane and checked the flights. Everybody had to rush to gate 1 from gate 20 we barley made the NW flight back to YWG. Than the flight was late 2 hours because of traffic and people trying to find the gate.

When I went to Japan for half the summer, I noticed in Osaka/Kansai, Miyako, and Okinawa, there were a small machine next to the gate that you insert your boarding pass in. The boarding pass comes out of another slot at the end of the machine, except, the small part you can keep pops out, not the entire boarding pass, making the boarding pass void. A light flashes and the gate agent glances at it. If it is a green light, you can pass. Neat, huh?

Those scanners exist in the US. At least, American uses them. If you get a green light, the small LCD displays "OK to Board". If you are indeed getting on the wrong flight, you would get a red light and an error message.

The new "Gold to Green" bridge that MSP is building will help on those perilous connections. It should open later in the year.
Regarding the topic, I sat down in 18C in an A320 to DCA and began to read the NW inflight magazine. (Also in MSP...Go figure) Then, two ladies came up to us and asked us why we were in their seats. The explanation was that the two ladies were going to MKE. Guess that's why the F/As make the confirmation announcement!

Never happened on a flight, but did once miss a stop in AMS by train and woke up in the middle of the night to find myself on the train/ferry to Copenhegen. The coffee bars had to wait (sniff sniff). Well, Copenhagen is also quite liberal as we soon found out.

My best flight screw up was flying business from NYC to Delhi and showing up at midnight without a visa. I spent 12 hours in the Delhi airport detention center with some dubious looking characters courtesy of the Indian police. Here's some advice, if you're ever in this situation, don't bother with $20s, just suck it up and fork over a few C notes. Lucky for me, company expense policies were pretty lax back then.

I think I've seen this kind of boarding pass machine in Australia at Qantas and Ansett gates back in 1993. This isn't a case of a wrong flight, but I can tell you this: On boarding a QF flight from SYD to CNS, my brother and I didn't encounter any problems with our Canadian Airlines boarding passes, which weren't compatible with those machines at all. But what nice Aussies they were - the gate agent just looked at our CP boarding passes and let us go straight to the front of the line to board the 747-400.

This didn't happent o me, but i witnessed it. Over x-mas my aunt and great grandma flew back from SFO-PHL on a USAirways A-319. Well normally the A-319 continues onto DCA, but tonight for some reason US decided that a 737-300 would operate the continuing leg and the A-319 would go to Manchester NH. Nobody knew about the 40 passengers on the inbound SFo flight, so the 737 left for DCA w/o 40 ticketed passengers 30 minutes before the Airbus landed. Well the SFO fligth landed 45 mins late, 30 after the 737 left and in about 20 mins they had the plane ready to leave for Manchester when they discovered there were 40 passengers sitting on thata irplane thinking they were oging ot Washington, well USAirways didn't know what to tell them as there plane had already left...and i watched those people get off the plane, they were very very upset, lol, i think US learned its lesson!

A few years ago I almost went the wrong way. I had several times before made a connection in Halifax from an Air Atlantic Dash 8 in from St. John N.B. to a BAE-146 home to Ottawa. This particular time the connection was VERY tight. For those of you who have flown turboprops in or out of Halifax, you know the walk can sometimes take you through 2 or 3 area codes! I ran through the long jetway and up the escalator. The usual gate for the flight to Ottawa had the boarding sign flashing. Since there wasn't too many people around I assumed I had just made it. The gate agent took my ticket and I got on board. It wasn't until I was comparing passes with an elderly woman in "my" seat that a f/a set me straight. It turns out the gate usage was switched around for that night and the BAE I boarded was destined to St. Johns Newfoundland. I certainly don't object to visiting The Rock but preferably when it's planned!
